I honestly think Schottenheimer's impact will be way more positive than many of us believe. Think about it, you don't MM has heard the same criticism of him. My guess is MM will allow him to coach to his strength or put it another way, do what he does best. Interesting praise Quinn threw at McAdoo. Also as Breer mentions below, I'd love to see Greg Roman added to the staff.

Here’s an under-the-radar thing to give Mike McCarthy credit for—the role he created for Ben McAdoo, and then Brian Schottenheimer, is outstanding. More or less, the idea he had those guys, McAdoo in 2021 and Schottenheimer last year, carrying a job description that had the veteran assistants studying league trends, troubleshooting game plans and sitting in on defensive meetings to give the coaches a set of eyes from the offensive side of the ball to consider.

I’ve talked to Cowboys DC Dan Quinn a couple of times about the job McAdoo and Schottenheimer have done, and he was over the moon in breaking down the benefits having someone in that role has had for him and that defense.

I think McAdoo would tell you that the experience allowed him to become a better coordinator when he got the shot to call plays again with the Panthers last year, and I think it’ll help Schottenheimer, too, as he transitions back into a coordinator role in replacing Moore in Dallas. And my guess would be that McCarthy will want to find another experienced hand (someone such as Greg Roman, maybe?) to fill the spot in 2023.

And, yeah, I know McCarthy’s a punching bag right now, and I’m not exempting him from criticism. But I would say there’s been plenty of good (replacing his quarterback and left tackle seamlessly early this year and hiring and keeping Quinn would be two other things) he’s done in Dallas as he enters a critical year for a lot of people in that organization.

Basically MM has hitched his future in Dallas to these two. If they don't work out, MM is done.
This is why I wont argue for a second about the Schottenheimer hire. Even if it goes down in flames MM is going down with his guys and his plans. No more forcing an already existing OC on him. Either this year is a success or it becomes obvious it's time to blow it up.

I would be all over hiring Greg Roman, he is excellent in rushing schemes, even before Baltimore.

Has Coach Moore expressed an opinion on these two gentlemen?

I think McCarthy has done enough to get another head coaching job if Dallas were to fire him anyways.

He’s a legitimate NFL coach unlike Garrett.
Funny you say this coz IMO this is exactly what we are seeing now. With only 2 years left on his contract, he wanna get his own brand out there so if Jerry fires him, he'll have other options.

I just don’t get anyone who hates McCarthy. He is not without his flaws but the team very rarely looks not prepared- even the losses for the most part are games we either give away or lose close. The exception I can remember being that terrible commanders game to end this year - which he definitely deserves blame for.

He’s 24-10 the last 2 regular seasons. He got us back to back postseason appearances and a road playoff win. He needs to be better as that’s not good enough but I think he’s doing a solid job.

How is Mike a punching bag right now again?…..
His handful of clock management snafus, coupled with the Cowboys’ continuing playoff difficulties have given the perpetually miserable “viable” reasons to continue overreacting. Plus, he’s fat. A lot of those mental giants who attach weight to coaching ability were the same people who were convinced that Garrett’s clapping made us lose.

I sure wish fans and the meddling FO in Dallas would just stick to the draft and free agency at this point. Let Big Mike coach. All of this spin keeps dripping out into the media and it all amounts to nothing. Shut up and figure out how to get better.

This is the answer, finally we have accountability and if MM is responsible for the results he should get to choose his coaches.

Yeah, all things considered he’s done a solid job in Dallas.

The 2020 year was a disgrace and they looked totally unprepared but his coaching staff has bounced back and they are a pretty well coached team imo.

It’s way better then it ever was with Garrett.

It's over but I would have rather they brought in a young, up and comer as OC. A guy like Brian Johnson in Philly who is a QB coach and worked well with Hurts. He's apparently rumored to be a leading candidate for the Notre Dame OC job.

Honestly, fans are so frustrated with our lack of post-season success over the last 25+ years, I think ANY coach is going to be on a short leash.
Big part of this. Any coach and in some regards players are going to receive the criticism for the lack of franchise success the past 25+ years.

It’s why I detach myself from the super bowl or bust mantra….I mean it’s nice in theory but it’s just not what this franchise is anymore. It may be what it was once and may be what we want it to be but right now? We need to earn the right to have those lofty goals.
I’m cautiously optimistic that McCarthy is building that here.

We will find out

Play calling is only as effective as the players executing it. Without Dak being better and better WRs, coaches don’t have a chance.
