Most HCs were assistants at one point and just needed their shot at a HC gig. Some do great, many flop and go back to assistants or coordinators. We will see…

He seems like a no nonsense guy, and will demand the best efforts or be gone.

I think it’s a disadvantage that he was a member of the previous coaching staff. I’m sure it’s happened in NFL history, but I don’t recall an offensive coordinator being elevated to head coach of the same team in subsequent years that has ever had any success.

And while a lot of those Shanahan guys like Lafelur, McVey and Shanahan get a lot of credit.....there are a lot of other wiz kids off that true that didn't do anything.

I'm not a fan of Shotty by any means. Nothing against the guy, I just don't know anything about him and would've preferred a real search. I'm just thinking of guys off the top of my head who weren't known as a great OC or DC and won a ring...John Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator if i'm not mistaken. I think the list is longer then we think.

I dont have an answer, Im sure there are a few, but they had to be some what successful to get a HC gig you would think?

As for our HC, I wasn't aware that he was even an OC in Dallas, he was hardly ever mentioned by announcers in games last year, shows you how much interest I had in last year.

I think they just interviewed well. Sirianni did. I think Shotty did too and yeah apparently he was the OC in title. Nobody knows what the hell he did lol.

Same can be said about most coaches from other teams as well. And who cares about that history, if it is true.

An owner is going to say, hey, our previous coaches have sucked. You worked for them so you must suck also. So go away..

Look at the opposite way.
Norv Turner was a WR coach. He becomes an OC, they went to the SB and won.
He did nothing as a HC. He put in his time, failed as a HC.
Many other examples of that from others as well, on many teams.

One way I think we can see if there’s improvement is in game management and specifically the clock. A lot of folks routinely were bothered by McCarthy’s struggles with clock management.

That should become evident in 2 minute situations

He seems to be much sharper in interviews than McCarthy was , Schottenheimer may be a leader of men .He will allow his coaches to coach,and hopefully he will bring success to Dallas with a much improved culture and running game,he looks good so far I like what I see, can he bring some disapline to the team.I think the players will like playing for him and have bought in to his scheme.

But for some odd reason, his coaching tenure is labeled a failure by many fans and media before his first game.

I think some underestimate the importance to managing people, especially players AND coaches. If we look back at some of the great NFL head coaches (Parcells, Johnson, Landry, Belichick), we notice they not only had good control of their players and team but also staff and coordinators.

Yeah I’m with you. My point is more to the fact that you have several rookie coaches on staff, especially the offensive side of the football.
