SI Breer: Shotty could be a better head coach than coordinator

Same can be said about most coaches from other teams as well. And who cares about that history, if it is true.

An owner is going to say, hey, our previous coaches have sucked. You worked for them so you must suck also. So go away..

Look at the opposite way.
Norv Turner was a WR coach. He becomes an OC, they went to the SB and won.
He did nothing as a HC. He put in his time, failed as a HC.
Many other examples of that from others as well, on many teams.
I thinks it’s a disadvantage to Schottenheimer. Probably why elevating your OC to your head coach is rarely done in the NFL. The notion that Jerry Jones could possibly know better is absurd. He is a bad General Manager.

Highly regarded head coach candidates are better able to attract highly regarded assistants. Al Harris is a highly regarded NFL asst. coach. Ben Johnson was arguably the most sought after head coach prospect at the end of last season. You do the math. Harris is a significant asset Jerry watched walk out the door. Coaching matters or it doesn’t.

To people who think something like this can't happen, go look at Andy Reid's career. He went from being a relatively an unknown OL/QB coach to becoming one of the best HC in the NFL.

Not saying Schotty will be as good but Reid wasn't even considered good enough to get hired as an OC before becoming the HC.

Looking back, a complete change was needed.
I think Jerry knows the value of Harris. He went that route many times, keeping coaches, and not allowing the new HC do a complete overhaul.

Now MM was able to bring in his own coaches, but not all of them. There were quite a few that were kept.

BS has his own guys, with the exception of one, in which I believe he wanted to keep.

Other highly regarded OC and DC been passed over as well given chances. BS is just the next one in line. Just so happens to be for an owner that most fans look for ways to whine about. And sometimes rightfully so. Many times.
As this time, there are mixed opinions.

Hopefully they’ve built in the flexibility to change that if it becomes too much.
Yeah I have a hard time believing Adams just came over to be the backup OC essentially. Maybe he gets his chance to be a play caller sooner or later.

I mean, there are so many coaches out there who fit the was/is a better coordinator than head coach.

But this is the first I hear of being a better head coach over his not so great coordinator history.

But it's that time of year I guess.

Cowboys!

Post of your career!!! Lol.

I was going to say that what he is will be revealed in adversity. Will he be a good clock manager or take risks in appropriate spots, etc.? That's what I want to see.
And fix the penalties...

It’s not whining. Jerry Jones has proven over time he’s as poor a general manager as he is an NFL franchise owner. It is time to sell the franchise to a group more able to put a competitive team on the field.

I didn’t say he was a great GM
I said he went a different route, and allowed BS to do his own thing. Or so it seems.

Ten employers in 25 years and the worst GM in the NFL can see what no one else ever did. The Cowboys should play their home games in Disneyland. That’s where this kind of fantasy belongs.
Don't forget a decade under Garrett.

I'm a fan of Schottenheimer, have been a supporter ever since he first came to the Cowboys, but lets not get ahead of ourselves...Two things I think are true here:

1) The guy has been a better OC than what he gets credit for. He helped Dak get to a career best season in 2023. He also took an offense in 2024 that simply wasn't very good and got them to middle of the pack. I almost think his 2024 work was excellent given what he had to work with.
2) There is reason for optimism with the coaching staff, but also reason to tap the breaks especially on offense. A rookie HC, rookie OC, rookie OL coach, rookie WR coach.
Three things to run a good offense:

1. Run the ball
2. Play action
3. Get the ball to our stars like Lamb

I think he'll be fine.

My only concern is can he do both now. Calling the offense and being the HC is a lot of work.
Exactly. Can he be a better HC, while be an OC???

I doubt that.

That is like can a Jerry be a good owner, while be the GM. Jerry can't be a good GM period.

Here we go again….

The coordinator getting his first shot at HC
gailey-chan.jpg

`This is the beginning of the dream,'' said Gailey, who signed a five-year contract. ``Another part of that dream ... is that we get to stand on that podium some late January afternoon and have a hand on that Lombardi Trophy. ...

``The end of the dream, the final dream, will be that ... we're champions with class, dignity and character. That's what I'm about.''

Owner Jerry Jones had never met Gailey before Sunday, but they clicked quickly. Within days he had moved past bigger names such as former San Francisco coach George Seifert, former UCLA coach Terry Donahue and Green Bay offensive coordinator Sherm Lewis.
Jones, who had been looking for a coach since announcing Switzer's resignation Jan. 9, said several things about Gailey convinced him he was right for the job.

``He's a highly innovative, creative mind on the offensive side of the ball,'' Jones said. ``He's a proven play-caller and someone who has done it in big games.''

He added that Gailey has head coaching experience, although not at this level. Jones also said that as a former quarterback Gailey should be able to relate to his own quarterback and he's ``in tune with today's NFL athlete and today's NFL game.''

The guy with the football dad

"Phillips is a Texan," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. "And I can't think of any person that has a better understanding of what football means to the state of Texas."
"It's great to have these cowboy boots back in Texas," Phillips said. "I want to thank Jerry for the opportunity.

"These opportunities don't come around very often. It's great to get a chance."
All told, Phillips has worked in the NFL in 30 of the past 31 years.

"This team is best served … by an NFL coach with experience," Jones said. "Wade's background and philosophy will serve this team well.”
The culture changer

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones listed wanting a culture change around Valley Ranch as one of his reasons for making the move from Phillips to Garrett, and those eight games confirmed to him he made the right decision.

"He's truly one of our own," Jones said of Garrett, who was a backup quarterback for seven seasons with the Cowboys. "We know him well for the qualifications that he has for this position, and I know that he has spent his entire life preparing for this day. He's well qualified."

Jones has so much respect for Garrett that he stressed the new coach will make the final call on who is on the coaching staff and indicated there will not be a player on the 53-man roster he doesn't approve of.
The hidden coordinator no one else wanted to promote
i

“I believe I have an advantage because I was here when we were 1-15 and I was here when we were Super Bowl champions," Campo said. "I want to bring back that championship attitude." Jones said he never seriously considered hiring someone from outside the organization because he decided quickly that Campo or special teams coach Joe Avezzano had the qualities he wanted.

This is the only one that has excited me since Jimmy….
The NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach.

The bar is very low for him.

Considering he was a fake OC here and was demoted or fired everywhere else before here.

So, he could be on the Mount Rushmore of worst Dallas head coaches and still be a better HC than coordinator because of how terrible a coordinator he is.
Yup.

he was definitely Not on anyone’s A list.
