So you want to know how active your team will be with a good free-agency market coming up in three months? Here's a chart of how much cap space each team was due to have next spring as of Saturday, along with how many players each team has under contract:

Team Signed Players 2008 cap room

1. Tennessee 39 $40.85 million
2. San Diego 44 $33.03 million
3. Jacksonville 43 $32.69 million
4. Buffalo 49 $32.05 million
5. New Orleans 39 $31.69 million
6. Cincinnati 48 $31.45 million
7. San Francisco 48 $30.91 million
8. Cleveland 42 $30.31 million
9. Arizona 34 $30.27 million
10.N.Y. Jets 45 $27.72 million
11.Oakland 40 $25.98 million
12.Tampa Bay 48 $25.90 million
13.Miami 48 $25.56 million
14.N.Y. Giants 49 $24.47 million
15.Detroit 42 $23.50 million
16.Houston 43 $22.91 million
17.Dallas 40 $20.61 million
18.Kansas City 44 $20.27 million
19.Chicago 52 $19.80 million
20.Pittsburgh 43 $18.61 million
21.Green Bay 48 $18.37 million
22.Philadelphia 49 $17.17 million
23.Denver 49 $16.77 million
24.Minnesota 49 $14.88 million
25.New England 41 $10.93 million
26.St. Louis 45 $9.61 million
27.Seattle 44 $9.55 million
28.Indianapolis 48 $8.49 million
29.Carolina 35 $6.05 million
30.Atlanta 52 $5.79 million*
31.Baltimore 42 $5.00 million
32.Washington 45 -$20.72 million

* Not including unspecified potential rebate from contested return of Michael Vick's pro-rated signing bonus.

And yes, you read it right. The Washington Commanders are $20 million over the projected '08 cap, a number that will be reduced once the 'Skins convert some bonuses assigned to the '08 cap (including a hefty one paid to tight end Chris Cooley) to signing bonuses, which can be pro-rated over the life of the contract.

25 teams with $10 million or more to spend! Nine teams with $30 million or more!

Wow, there are going to be some overpaid players this offseason.

I wonder if the Cowboys cap number included Romo's contract.

If it doesn't, SI didn't do its job. His salary is on the books for next year.

Anybody feel like converting this to cap money per roster spots available?

Dallas is at 1.59 million per roster spot. I'm too lazy to do the rest.

A few of our RFA tenders will be above that amount.

Oh man, look at Carolina! They are going to be sucking for a while.

They and Baltimore are in similar positions. Both have a lot of older players on their rosters and little cap space.

What's the point of a salary cap if these numbers are going to be so high anyway?

$30 mil under the cap? Are they kidding me? Wasn't the salary cap a total of $50 mil back in 2000?

The numbers are high because the cap has been going up really fast lately. The cap's been going up really fast lately because the NFL has been making boatloads of money (and because of details like the timing of the TV contracts). In a couple years, the cap growth will slow or stop for a while and teams will start crashing into the top of it. In the meantime, it's good to be a free agent.

I feel bad for the skins. I'm sure glad we have Jerry as an owner and not Snider. Snider puts all his eggs in one basket and builds old teams. You guys remember that year Deon was a Skin? That had to be one of the worst deals ever!

How do the Iggles have less cap room than us ;) with no receivers? Here I was calling their ownership cheap!

Per roster spot, they have more cap room. They have $17 million to spend on 4 players and we have 20 million to spend on 13.

NE only $10 mil under and they have to sign Moss, CB Asanti and probably some others, all those SB bonuses in the players contracts, and McFadden(?).

Some good news. The cap may slow NE down next year.

This only shows me that we can probably say good bye to Crayton. Someone is going to pay him ALOT more than what we are going to want to.

I've redone the formating and added a division of the cap monies divided by the open roster spots. (53 man roster) This gives a better view of a teams cap space. For instance, if a team only has $15M in cap space, but only as a single open roster spot. (or $19M and 1 spot like Chicago) They have a lot of money to do something. On the other hand, you have $30M in cap space and 19 roster spots to fill. (Arizona) Well, it's not doom and gloom, but you have to stretch the dollar further than the $15M and one roster spot.

Now, don't take these numbers as set in stone as trades, drafting, player cuts, signing minimum contract players, etc all effect these numbers. One thing I will say is New England, Baltimore, Carolina, and Washington are not in great position cap wise. Anytime your roster spot to cap ratio is below $1M a player, it doesn't look good.

I hate standing up for the Skins, but because of the way they use roster bonuses, I don't think that cap figure can be considered at all accurate. The Danny will convert a whole bunch of huge roster bonuses to signing bonuses and spread out the cap hit over the future years of the contract, and drastically change that -$20M number.

I'm not saying they're in good shape. Clearly they have a below average talent level and an above-average salary commitment with their current personnel. But I think it will be pretty easy to push $10 - $20 million in roster bonuses into future years.

I invented the term 'cap heck' to describe the Commanders situation 3 or 4 years ago, and I think it still applies. They'll be able to cut some guys, restructure some guys, guarantee some contracts, and convert some roster bonuses to signing bonuses, and then they'll be able to grab a scrub late in free agency and claim the off-season super bowl title yet again. :)
