Antwaan Randle El may have played his last game as a member of the Steelers. The Commanders are one team interested in the receiver.
Antwaan Randle El would be a nice fit for the Commanders, who are searching for help at receiver and could use an upgrade in the return game.

If the Jets slap John Abraham with the franchise tag, they may try to trade him and one destination could be San Diego in a deal for quarterback Philip Rivers, especially with former Chargers quarterback coach Brian Schottenheimer having been hired as the Jets new offensive coordinator.

The biggest question the Cowboys have this off-season, not just from the line standpoint but the entire team, is the status of longtime Pro Bowl guard Larry Allen. If the Cowboys decide to release Allen to avoid the bonus, they would save about $3.5 million in cap space this year, after eating some $4 million in his prorated signing bonus.

It will be interesting to see if former Vikings coach Mike Tice, now with Jacksonville, tries to persuade restricted free-agent receiver Koren Robinson to sign with the Jaguars. Tice persuaded Robinson to come to Minnesota.

Joe Montana on Monday defended his decision to decline an invitation to be a part of a Super Bowl pregame ceremony with past Super Bowl MVPs. The Chronicle cited two league sources in Monday's editions saying that the three-time Super Bowl MVP wanted at least $100,000 in order to appear. Montana said he chose to be with his family.

An exhausted Terry Bradshaw talked to Dan Rooney and explained why he was among only a handful of former Super Bowl MVPs who did not attend. He watched the game with his daughters, his brother and his parents at his ranch in Oklahoma, according to someone close to Bradshaw.

And after getting blasted by Donovan McNabb last week, Terrell Owens was conspicuously quiet. Owens likely was in audition mode. Someone with some sense - and that couldn't have been Drew Rosenhaus - must have told Owens to keep his mouth on mute while he searches for a new home. Don't scare off Mike Shanahan or Herm Edwards or Jon Gruden. Owens needs a job, and a nice contract, since he will not be playing for the Eagles next season.

Steelers coach Bill Cowher said that had Ben Roethlisberger not scored on third down from the one near the end of the first half, he would have gone for the touchdown on fourth-and-inches Sunday, trailing 3-0, with 1:55 left.

In an attempt to motivate his team, coach Mike Holmgren showed Seattle players $73,000 -- the winner's share -- in $1 bills the Saturday night before Super Bowl XL. The Seahawks had to settle for the $38,000 loser's share.

Mike Holmgren told a few thousand Seahawks fans at Qwest Field in Seattle yesterday that he wasn't pleased with the officiating either. "We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers," Holmgren told the fans. "I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well." His comments might bring a hefty fine from the NFL, which frowns on coaches criticizing officials.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who is co-chairman of the NFL Competition Committee, conceded yesterday that the league had a tough weekend officiating-wise on Jan. 14-15 in the Divisional Playoffs. But he said he thinks much of the debate over officiating in Super Bowl XL was a result of the extensive media coverage of the game. Fisher said game officials get too much blame.

Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will interview for the Raiders' head coaching job in Oakland today or tomorrow. While Whisenhunt may be the man the Raiders want, they might not get him. The Oakland job is notorious for being a graveyard for many coaches under the impatient owner Al Davis.

The Texans hiring of John Benton will not affect any decision regarding Mike Sherman, the former Green Bay head coach. Sherman has been offered a position as assistant head coach/offensive line. Gary Kubiak still is waiting to hear from him.

Officials with the Louisiana Superdome say the arena will be ready for football this September -- mostly. some of the creature comforts, like carpeting in pricey suites or a concession stand at every turn, won't be available until 2007. Business leaders in Sioux Falls, S.D., decided Monday to renew their effort to lure the Vikings' training camp to their city -- provided the team does not use them as leverage to squeeze a better deal from another Minnesota city.
