While the Pats probably won't pay for a marquee name like Seattle's Shaun Alexander, Green Bay's Ahman Green or Indianapolis's Edgerrin James, other options exist. One situation to keep an eye on is in Baltimore, where the Ravens have to choose between free agents Jamal Lewis and Chester Taylor.

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning raised some eyebrows Sunday after the team's playoff loss to Pittsburgh when he appeared to criticize his offensive line. At the same time Manning was speaking in the interview room, left tackle Tarik Glenn was in the locker room, hogging the blame and defending Manning. Coach Tony Dungy said Manning was not pointing fingers.

Eric Mangini, the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator, will be named the Jets' coach today, according to several people briefed on the agreement who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak before an announcement.
-- New York Times

The Cardinals have the cap room to pursue Seattle's Shaun Alexander, who will be on the market, but coach Denny Green doesn't like breaking the budget for one player. If Southern California running back LenDale White falls to No. 10, the Cardinals would be foolish to pass on him.
-- Arizona Republic

DeShaun Foster's broken fibula puts the running back out for the rest of the postseason and makes his future with the Panthers unclear. Foster can become a free agent after the season and team officials have said they want to re-sign him. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney reiterated that position Monday, saying the injury (Foster's third major health issue in four years) does not change the team's thinking.
-- Charlotte Observer

The Vikings say there has been no discussion about trading enigmatic quarterback Daunte Culpepper; the same with backup Brad Johnson, who wants to be a starter.
-- St. Paul Pioneer Press

Carson Palmer's knee injury is severe enough that he has to temporarily move out his previously owned southern California house into one with far fewer stairs.

LaVar Arrington has spoken several times recently with Commanders owner Daniel Snyder, team sources said, and said he is willing to consider restructuring his contract to remain with the team. While trading or releasing Arrington would provide cap relief in 2007, retaining him and converting his roster bonus to a signing bonus would actually benefit Washington's 2006 cap.
-- Washington Post

The New York Jets inquired about trading for Skins QB Patrick Ramsey in September. Miami and Oakland are two other options for him, and several general managers said Ramsey likely would yield a mid-round pick in return. Ramsey and coach Joe Gibbs met yesterday but made no final decisions on his future and agreed to speak again shortly.
-- Washington Post

The Bucs likely will have to honor Brian Griese's contract, including a $2.6-million roster bonus, if they want the veteran quarterback to return next season. Agent Ralph Cindrich said Monday that Griese, who had season-ending knee surgery in October, would be medically cleared to play by the start of free agency.
-- St. Petersburg Times

Mike Nolan wanted an experienced play-caller for his next offensive coordinator, and now he has him. Freshly fired Raiders coach Norv Turner will be named the 49ers' offensive coordinator today.
-- San Francisco Chronicle

The Raiders spoke to Tampa Bay defensive line coach Ron Marinelli on Monday, but appear to be out of the running for Fresno State's Pat Hill, who has yet to schedule a formal interview in Alameda. That is significant, because Hill's self-imposed 10-day window during which he said he would entertain NFL offers closes today.
-- San Francisco Chronicle

If the Lions pursue Jim Haslett, Rod Marinelli or someone else, that could indicate they don't want to wait for Pittsburgh assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm and the Steelers' season to end. But if the Lions don't do much, that could indicate Grimm is their man.
-- Detroit Free Press

The Saints are leaning heavily toward offering their head coaching job to Sean Payton, according to league sources, and they likely will decide between Payton and Maurice Carthon within the next day or two. Former Packers coach Mike Sherman remains a viable candidate, but he appears to be a distant third choice.
-- New Orleans Times-Picayune

Saints owner Tom Benson has handed GM Mickey Loomis the keys to the franchise and trusts him to make the right decision in hiring a coach. Benson obviously believes Jim Haslett mainly was responsible for the Saints' slide; that's the most logical explanation for his willingness to hold on to, and apparently increase the power of, a GM who has overseen a 28-36 product in four years.
-- New Orleans Times-Picayune

The final phase of the Rams' coaching search apparently began in Los Angeles with a second interview for Miami offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera also are scheduled to get second interviews. Barring a last-second hitch, the next head coach of the Rams should be named by the end of this week.
-- St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Jim Bates, one of the NFL's leading defensive coordinators, has coached his final game for the Green Bay Packers. In a stunning development, Bates and new coach Mike McCarthy came to what both parties described late Monday as a mutual parting of the ways.
-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Cowboys designated quarterback Drew Henson to NFL Europe on Monday, allowing him to see if the improvement he and owner/general manager Jerry Jones felt he made last season can translate to the field.

With Foster out for the Panthers it looks highly doubtful that the Panthers will get past the Seahawks.

I don't know about that. Nick Goings started a few games last year and had 6 100yd games. I'm just not a big Foster fan but I really don't believe that the Panthers offense will suffer that much.
