Signing FAs Based on Draft Grades

Why are the cowboys making trades and signing free agents based on their draft grades. We traded for Mingo based on his draft grade and are notorious for signing first round busts. Do we not have a sperate NFL scouting team or is it just a marketing ploy to hype up bargain bin signings and sell it to fans as unrealized potential.
Because they have a very, very high, and of course delusional, opinion of themselves.

Wait WE liked him? Okay. Yes. Yes.

They draft based on SPARQ scores, and I'd imagine they see their FA philosophy as a cheap way to accumulate elite athletes. If they can coach them up, GREAT! If not, no big loss. The problem is they're overlooking players that have actually been productive in this league. There's no sense in having a team full of track stars if they can't play football.

Parcells hit on Marc Colombo and Jerrah decided to make it his entire offseason strategy :muttley::muttley::muttley:

What’s the problem with the strategy? They thought the player was good coming out of school, it didn’t work out in their first scenario, so they bring them in with the idea that they will be able to realize their potential in a new environment under low risk terms.

I don't necessarily have a problem with doing that. Parcells used to like to do it because someone once thought enough of the players to draft him that early. The difference is that I prefer taking those players when you don't actually need them to fill roles. Then, if they exceed expectations, they can beat someone out. If they don't, you can toss them to the curb.

Churning the roster

Quite frankly, I think leaning on draft grades to evaluate FAs is the lazy way to do things, so it fits the Dallas FO to a tee. I think the best tool for evaluation is good, old tape study…it gives an objective assessment of a player’s strengths and weaknesses.

I don’t mind signing former first round picks to cheap 1 year deals to plug holes. What I mind is trading 4th round picks for a WR and QB that proved they can’t play in this league.

Manning sweepstakes?

Would make sense if they didn’t restructure Dak
Dak’s contract won’t have any effect on Manning since he won’t be coming out until 2027 at the earliest. Dallas would be able to get out from under Dak by then.

They are just trying to find cheap talent. Honestly its not a bad idea. Even if you bat 3 of 10, you aren't risking much. We got some milage out of guys like Hooker, McClain and Jonathan Cooper
Yeah, I don't mind these small swings but when you add it all up we could have gotten a player that would actually upgrade something.

You also need a coaching staff with a history of getting the best out of their players.

look at Baun and Becton.

Great d coordinator got the best out of him, and the best OL coach in the NFL made becton look like who he was drafted to be.

That doesn’t exist in Dallas.
Good point re coaching and results. Wonder what say Eberflus has in these selections based on playing against them

The Cowboys already have their own scouting and feelings on the player before he was drafted. More than a casual referral to a first, but high pick.
