We can't sign one unless another team signs one of our UFAs right? How does Rolle fit into this...is he a UFA if he is released?

I believe we are allowed at least 1 big signing. Someone else may need to go into detail about it though.

We fall under the final eight plan I believe:

What is the Final Eight Plan?
During the Final League Year, the eight clubs that make the divisional playoffs in the previous season have additional restrictions that limit their ability to sign unrestricted free agents from other clubs. In general, the four clubs participating in the championship games are limited in the number of free agents that they may sign; the limit is determined by the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs. They cannot sign any UFAs unless one of theirs is signed by another team.

For the four clubs that lost in the divisional playoffs, in addition to having the ability to sign free agents based on the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs, they may also sign players based on specific financial parameters. Those four only will be permitted to sign one unrestricted free agent for $5.5 million (estimated) or more in year one of the contract, plus the number of their UFAs who sign with another team. They also can sign any unrestricted free agents for less than $3.7 (estimated) million in year one of the contract with limitations on the per year increases.

In the case of all final eight teams, the first year salary of UFAs they sign to replace those lost cannot exceed the first year salary of the player lost with limitations on the per year increases.

This is like doing taxes without turbotax....:bang2:

Yes, we can sign one big signing 5.5 million, but we can sign as many 3.0 million players as we want. thats what adam said; way i understand it though, any player that is released is free to sign with anyone, when the team releases him;

if a player is released he doesnt count as a UFA per the rule.

Basically per the rule, a UFA is a player who has played out the length of his contract and now he is free to offer his services to all 32 teams.

Up here in Wisconsin they are saying that the Packers are going to be able to take advantage of this new rule because they aren't part of the Final 8. Essentially you might call them the best team not affected by the FA give/take rule and they can use it to their advantage along with their extremely deep pockets.

1) As one of the final 8 teams in the playoffs, we can sign one "expensive" free agent to a salary of 5.5 million or more in the first year...

2) We can sign as many "cheap" unrestricted free agents to salaries of 3.7 million a year or less in the first year as we can get to agree to terms...

3) We have one unrestricted free agent ourselves (Montrae Holland), so if he signs somewhere else for a contract of more than 3.7 million in the first year (fat chance), then we can sign one more unrestricted free agent to a contract not exceeding what Holland gets paid in the first year...

4) Players released by other teams, like Rolle, are NOT "unrestricted free agents" according to the league's definition of that phrase, and the Cowboys can sign any of them they might care to, for any amount of money they're willing to pay...
