I never played The Sims before, nor the City simulator. But I purchased SimCity 5 about a month ago to see if it interested me.

It is frustrating as heck.

Every time I think I have a good region going, the game throws a disaster at me, or pollution, or freaking zombies!! :laugh2:

I've looked at the wiki pages, watched some Youtube videos, but nothing much is helping. I get to a point where I can start on a Great Works project and something happens to undermine all of the planning.

Anyone play it that might be able to provide some insight to building a successful Region and Great Works?

It's got 1.5 stars out of 5, on Amazon with 2700 reviews. I would stay away. When ever games come out, wait a few days and read reviews on it. I made this mistake last year, with Madden. I LOVE franchise mode, so when I went to go play it, and it did not have it, I returned the game.

I didn't get Madden last year - stopped playing video games much about a year and a half ago. No franchise mode?? huh?? that is messed up. did they try to replace it with something?

Some connected careers crap, I literally turned it on, saw it didn't have it, turned it off, and returned it. You couldn't edit players, like if you wanted to change Ware from a LB to a DE, and you couldn't create a player and play a season with him. So, this year, I will wait with madden, and see if they put it back. Their goal was to give the online people more.

Reviews are low because of the always online stuff, but it has been fixed since. The gameplay is actually awesome they just screwed up the launch big time.

I had a franchise mode in Madden before I got rid of it; I'm not sure what your talking about.

I think they added it in, if I'm not mistaken, the first version of the game didn't have franchise mode.

Gameplay, in the littlebit I've played 13, is pretty great.

SimCity 5 still has a lot of under the hood problems. IE, they claim it works a particular way, but code sniffers have discovered that they fudged a lot of mechanics. Because of the online debacle, folks were paying closer attention than they otherwise might have, and lots of inconsistancies showed up.

From what I gathered from the reviews, it has an online DRM, and is very limited when trying to build things. And it kinda sounds like their servers are up 100% of the time.

I am pretty sure, this is going to be the new thing for gaming, this online DRM which sucks!

After two weeks of play, dealing with bugs, inexperience, and other issues, this game has become a challenge of sort for me. The latest patch seems to have fixed some of the issues, and after multiple times starting a region only to abandon it, I am starting to get a feel for the game. Since I don't know anyone else that plays, I have been doing everything myself (building all cities in a region). My goal is to get one of (any of) the great works completed. After that, I may try to join an open region. Right now I think I would be a hinderance rather than a help. So until I can accomplish my goal, I will keep going at it by myself.

I'm tempted to get it when the Mac version comes out next month. Probably not a good idea because I'm sure I'll sink way too much time into it.
