The thing about the '92 defense and that of '14, is that they both contained very little top round talent.

Neat similarities, but I wish this team had a defense as good as the '92 team and I wish Romo's body was as young as Aikman's was. Besides all that, this has never had that 1992 feel to it for me. I mean, for those of us that are old enough, I think we knew that '92 team was really good before that season even began. We may have not entered the season knowing they were good enough to go into Candlestick and beat the 49ers in the NFCCG, but I think we knew they were probably going to be in the NFCCG, and that they would eventually win a Super Bowl or 2, or 3. This season feels a little more like 2009 to me from that standpoint that it's a season unlike the ones before it, where something has obviously clicked, and we can only hope they keep some of this going for a few seasons. Hopefully next year or the year after, it will win them a Super Bowl as they build the defense back up.

The similarities are chilling and, quite frankly, they make me all tingly. What say you?

Lincoln's Vice President was Johnson
Kennedy's Vice President was Johnson....

Great post! They were discussing this on 105.3 earlier. The key difference though is that the 1992 defense was ranked 1st in the league.

Ya, that's a bit of an issue, but it sure has been a fun season thus far. The similarities are real.

Troy Aikman also had his best completion percentage in 1993, breaking his own team record for 1991.

Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater. Kennedy was shot in a Ford Lincoln, and his assassin was captured in a theater.

Despite those similarities, I would say this team feels a lot more like the 1991 team than the 92 team.

I think our defense next year will be a lot better. If we can win the Super Bowl this year, however, I think we could go on a tear over the next three years.

I don't think people thought too highly of the 1992 defense before the season. Remember that was Haley's first year in Dallas and Woodson was a rookie non-starter. Obviously, by week 17 that defense was more highly regarded than today's defense.

LE Tony Tolbert - Just a guy as of the beginning of 1992. First Pro Bowl was 1996.
LDT Russell Maryland - #1 overall pick in 1991. First Pro Bowl in 1993.
RDT Tony Casillas - Reclamation project.
RE Charles Haley - Reclamation project.
LOLB Ken Norton, Jr. - Didn't make his name until the 1992 season.
MLB Robert Jones - Rookie 1st round pick, but Jimmy was worried because he was slow to get the mental side of playing in the NFL.
ROLB Vinson Smith - Just a guy.
LCB Larry Brown - A 12th round pick in 1991. Not highly regarded.
RCB Kevin Smith - A first round pick, but a rookie in 1992.
SS Thomas Everett - Mid-tier type NFL player obtained for a 5th round pick.
FS James Washington - Journeyman type NFL player.

I don't think people thought it would be as good as it ended up being, but we knew it wasn't hot garbage. The 2013 Cowboys defense was the hottest piece of garbage in the history of garbage, so I think we all knew a top 10 defense probably wasn't going to happen this year. I think most of us were just hoping they could be as good as average.

Uncanny similarities.......but I agree that the biggest difference was the defense was ranked #1 that year and therefore the Cowboys had a great chance to be successful that year in the postseason. This time, most believe the defense is what will hold back the Boys from postseason success---and that they may be a year or two away. But we shall see.

BTW, the '91 defense did have 4 #1 picks playing on their defense along with Norton a high 2nd rd pick, and a Jim Thorpe winner in the defensive backfield....so they did have some potential and talent on that team as opposed to the current D. Shows what Marinelli has done with chewing gum and duct tape.

I'm not certain what you meant by this, but just for clarification, LA was drafted in 1994.

I know he wasn't on the team yet. I'm just saying our O-line was pretty young if you consider that we'd acquire Larry Allen in the 94 draft. The right side of the line was still in their mid 20's going into the 92 season. The LT and LG were in their early 30s, but if you consider that we got Allen the following year, 4 out of 5 of our O-linemen were young. But not as young as our current line.
