The big question this week revolves around TO. Many would say the Super Bowl aspirations of the Dallas Cowboys are riding on the ankle of Owens. It's an easy argument to make. Cowboys offense minus TO equals pedestrian or so the numbers say. What's not figured into the equation for the first 16 weeks of the regular season was the "X" factor in the equation. Now I was never a math major and when letter get thrown in with numbers you might as well be writing in Greek as far as I'm concerned but this one is easy to figure out.
If you have a TO at only 75% and you add an "X" knowing "X" equals a healthy Terry Glenn then you get a 100% TO. Not making much sense? That's OK, let's do what I have done since grade school and leave the math out of it. Who needs a regents diploma in math anyways?
The Cowboys need Owens to take the field. Nothing more, nothing less. Sure we would all feel better if Owens was galloping around Valley Ranch like an award winning race horse but for the first time this year Owens will have a Stallion at WR on the field with him. The Giants were going to double TO if healthy, it was no secret and now they may be leaning toward single coverage thinking he may just be hobbled enough to man up. For the first 16 weeks this might have been reason for concern for Dallas. It would allow the Giants to man up on Crayton and allowing better match-ups to Cover Witten. Well here is where Glenn comes into play. Glenn may not strike fear into the Giants right now but non the less he is someone they need to cover, someone they will have to pay a little extra attention to opening the field for Witten and Crayton. One big play by Glenn and all bets are off, the Giants will be scrambling early to adjust coverages and the forgotten man once again will be Jason Witten left to eat up any LB or S the Giants are forced to put on him. Glenn's return is just one of the keys for victory for Dallas.
1. Garrett must establish the run early. Forcing the Giants to put 8 in the box and letting our big OL pound on the Giants smaller front 7 not only keeps our defense fresh, keeps the Giants special pass rushing package off the field but will open the passing game and make a 75% healthy TO seem like a 90% healthy TO.
2. If Glenn can come up with a few big plays early as mentioned before it's going to cause the Giants to make adjustments on defense opening up the running game and force the G-Men to pull a DB off of Witten and we all know how well that has worked for opposing teams in the past.
3. The defense must stop Brandon Jacobs. The Giants OL is hurting and I for one doubt all the calls of greatness as a result of the last 2 weeks for Eli Manning. Stop Jacobs and force Manning to beat us. The Giants OL can not hold up for 60 minutes against the Cowboys pass rush.
4. The defense must attack Manning. If there is anytime for Wade Phillips to dust off the blitz packages he has been sitting on all year it's now. If we can get to Eli early he going to crumble like a dry biscuit.
5. If Glenn is the "x" factor on offense then Roy Williams is the "X" factor on defense. I have been one of the biggest critics of Williams all year but my gut tells me he is coming to play this Sunday. With Shockey out Dallas will bring Williams tighter to the line of scrimmage where he is at his best. If we can use Roy as essentially a 5th LB allowing him to blitz and shutting down Jacobs this could get ugly for the Giants fast.
6. Strike early! Dallas needs to get a lead early. Not only does it slow down Jacobs, force Eli to beat us and allow us to control the clock but we all know the Giants are the biggest bunch of basket cases outside of the Spears family. If Dallas beats the Giants to the punch the panic will set in, the wining will begin, the bickering will commence and sure as Barry Bonds will deny using steroids the Giants will lose their composure and the yellow hankies will start raining down like gifts from heaven for Dallas.
