for players in trouble, here's a question. You guys knew this thread was coming from someone, too.

With Benson's release and only one veteran RB on the team (MBIII), do we pick Benson up, or stick with who we have on the roster. Some of the posters here have said if MBIII goes down with an injury, they aren't so sure Felix and Choice can carry on.

My first instinct is to stay away from him because of his two arrests in the last five weeks and his lack of production when he did play in games. He certainly has the "Blair Thomas" effect going on -- highly-touted collegiate runner who can't seem to get over the hump.

My second thought is we do need a veteran backup RB. So far we have 3 rookies, a player with a year of experience and MBIII. Not great depth. Perhaps we sign him to the vet minimum and a similar contract to Tank's and Pacman's, i.e., you screw up and you're gone.

I have mixed emotions about this because he was one of my favorite RBs while he played in college (I'm not a UT fan, thought) and I thought he'd come out and have a great NFL career. But, I also think you can have too many bad apples on the team.

I guess the real question is does it make sense to sign him to the vet min?

its a fair question, but I just dont see it. When it comes down to the 53 man roster, were gonna need to use those slots for other players. I dont think we can afford to bring 4 RBs with us.

I'm not so sure that teams in NFL as we know it today really need a veteran RB on the roster to be sucessful. I think it's more of a requirement to have talent depth. Now, do we have adequate talent depth? That I'm not sure of.

NO!!! Not only is he a troubled individual most likely facing a suspension, but he has no upside. He has been absolutely terrible in the NFL.

I'd rather sign OJ Simpson and see if he has any juice left in the tank.

We don't need to sign Cedric Benson for several reasons:
  1. The easiest position for a first-year player to transition into the NFL is running back. It also helps that the team drafted two solid running backs in Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. Rookie depth at running back isn't a negative for this reason.
  2. Calculated risk at noseguard and cornerback are not the same as with running back. Terry Johnson had gun issues, but the importance of a 3-4 noseguard is more important than some fans realize. With Jason Ferguson falling to injury, proven veteran depth behind Jay Ratliff was minimal, to say the least.
  3. The importance of veteran depth at cornerback is even more important than at noseguard because it is a position which isn't an easy transition for first-year players. As weak as Jacques Reeves was, he was quality veteran depth at the position. With his departure, pure veteran depth was dumped on the shoulders of the starters, Terence Newman and Anthony Henry--both of whom have had recent injury issues. Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick are quality cornerbacks, but the calculated risk of obtaining Adam Jones superseded that of both rookies as far as veteran depth is concerned.
  4. Unlike Terry Johnson and Adam Jones, Benson has not had a chance to reflect on his off-the-field problems. Adding him to the roster well-before Goodell has even handed down his suspension isn't practical from a numbers viewpoint. Even a team as loaded as Dallas must place a premium on its roster, thus Bension + 2008 Cowboys addition = wasted roster spot. 2009? Possibly, but not this season.

Jones and Choice make this a Mute Point, However, I don't think he's that good even if he didn't have Legal Problems.

Benson destined for the Texans. We shouldn't even consider it.

it seems more likely that he is destined for a suspension and then life out of the league. Cedric has shown that he doesn't have the heart to play in the NFL.
