Safety Taylor Mays went through a series of coverage drills during USC's pro-day workouts on Wednesday. Mays, a possibility for the Dallas Cowboys with their first-round draft choice, ran well during the combine at Indianapolis and thought it more important to show his agility and how it relates to coverage.

Mays had only one interception last season, a shockingly low number for a player who considers himself to be a ``playmaker.'' At the Senior Bowl, Mays suggested he was held back by USC's defensive scheme. He said the USC coaches wanted him to focus on tackles rather than interceptions. In the Senior Bowl, playing for the Miami Dolphins' coaching staff, Mays had an interception.

The Los Angeles Times attended the workout and offered this quote on Mays from an anonymous NFL scout:

``He's OK in space, but you don't want him in tons of space. His size almost hurts him. A little bit of a smaller man might move around a little better, even if he's not as good an athlete.''

At the Senior Bowl, Mays was listed at 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds.

Taylor Mays would be an excellent replacement to Bobby Carpenter.

Perhaps but it seems to be a waste for the 1st round...

I think the only reason people hate the idea of drafting Mays is because of the decline of Roy Williams 31.

Mays is a great football player.
