‘SKINS KEEP CLEARING CAP SPACE
Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 1:04 p.m.
In what could be the last year with an NFL salary cap, the Washington Commanders are playing their annual game of restructuring old contracts in the hopes of clearing space to sign new players to even bigger deals.
According to the Washington Post, the team has restructured the contract of tackle Chris Samuels, and could soon be re-doing the deal of defensive lineman Cornelius Griffin.
Samuels is due to receive a base salary of $5 million in 2009. Though the Post doesn’t have the specifics as to the new contract, the deal will be extended and the salary will be lowered, presumably by converting a large portion of the salary to a guaranteed payment.
According to NFLPA records, Samuels currently is signed through 2011. He’s due to earn base salaries of $6.5 million and $7.5 million, respectively, in the final two years of the contract.
As we recently pointed out (and as we’re not fully sure we understand), the 30 percent rule potentially will require the Commanders to also convert a portion of his 2010 salary into an option bonus. They might have to do it for 2011, too.
Griffin has a base salary of $4.2 million. Again, details regarding the specific potential savings from a restructuring aren’t yet available.
Per NFLPA records, Griffin is signed through 2010. He is owed a base salary of $5.25 million next year.
The Commanders also might release cornerback Shawn Springs. Since he’s in the last year of his contract and given that he has a $6 million base salary, the team would realize an instant savings of $6 million by dumping him.
The money would be devoted in part to re-signing cornerback DeAnglo Hall. But the Post doesn’t seem to think that the Commanders will chase defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.
We’ll believe it when we don’t see it.
