Here is our 2013 NFL Draft Sleepers, or under-rated prospects for the 2013 NFL Draft
By Eric Bendig
Below is a list of players who you should keep an eye on throughout the pre draft Combine and Pro Day workouts. These will be the guys (for the most part) who will round out your team’s 4th thru 7th round draft picks and the guys who will be Priority Undrafted Free Agents.
*Denotes NFL Combine Invite
Quarterbacks
*Brad Sorensen, Southern Utah, 6’5 230 lbs. - Strong armed gunslinger who can make all the NFL throws and stands tall in the pocket. Puts nice touch on deep balls and has a knack for putting ball in tight window. BYU Transfer.
Jeff Tuel, Washington State, 6’3 221 lbs. - Great player when healthy, but suffered a lot of injuries in career. Was successful even though he played with subpar talent his whole career. Has exceptional leadership qualities and mobility in the pocket; good touch on deep balls but arm strength is a concern.
Running Backs
*Miguel Maysonet, Stony Brook, 5’9 205 lbs.- The more I watch him the more I think he has a great chance to be an every down back in the NFL, one day. Can catch the ball out of backfield and has very good speed and quickness showing great burst through the hole.
Michael Hill, Missouri Western State, 5’10 205- Off. MVP of the Raycom College Football All Star Classic, not on my radar beforehand but studying film after I see that he is a tremendous open field runner with great instincts and the cutting ability to match. Probably not going to run very fast in 40 yard dash, but has ability to make and contribute on a team in the NFL.
Wide Receivers
Jasper Collins, Mount Union, 5’10 18lbs. – Game translates to slot receiver in the NFL I think, but he is quite the talent. He can make people miss in open field and has great hands and deep ball skills. Huge threat after the catch and could make an impact in the punt return game in the NFL.
*Aaron Mellette, Elon, 6’3 216 lbs.- Mellette used a great Senior Bowl week to show he belongs in the middle rounds of the draft. He could use the Combine to shoot up even farther. He has great length and uses his body exceptionally well. Deep ball skills make him a possible starting outside receiver in the NFL.
Tight Ends
Michael Williams, Alabama, 6’6 270 lbs.- Here is an example of a player who is from a big time team and isn’t getting the love he deserves. Williams is not going to fool anyone as a receiver, but he is the best blocking tight end in the draft. Showed at Senior Bowl that he could use big body to get separation from defenders. Biggest snub from the NFL combine in my opinion.
Jack Doyle, Western Kentucky, 6’5 255 lbs.- Another Senior Bowl participant and Combine snub, Doyle has his moments as a blocker where he is overmatched, but he is relentless at his craft. Very good route runner and receiver. He uses his great size to separate and has outstanding jumping ability. He will find a place on a team looking for a solid receiving TE.
Offensive Lineman
*Terron Armstead, Arkansas- Pine Bluff, 6’5 306 lbs.- Armstead had a standout week at the East West Shrine game only to end up being invited to come to the Senior Bowl as an injury replacement, where he further solidified his place. He is a mauler, a guy who plays with a nasty streak but has excellent feet. May not play LT in NFL, but RT for sure and could kick inside to Guard if needed. Versatile.
*David Quessenberry, San Jose State, 6’5 295 lbs.- Used a great week at the Senior Bowl to propel his name up draft boards. You looking for Versatile, the guy played every spot except center during the week and excelled at most. Long arms and great technique, could surprise folks and sneak into 3rd, 4th round.
Defensive Tackle
*Brandon Williams, Missouri Southern State, 6’2 345 lbs.- Scheme versatile lineman, who could anchor the nose in a 3-4 scheme or play the shade technique in a 4-3 look. Extremely quick for a big man and has great pass rushing ability, has to stay in shape but a solid mid round prospect.
*Montori Hughes, Tennessee- Martin, 6’5 328 lbs.- Hughes was kicked out of Tennessee but resurrected his career at UT- Martin and finished with a great week at the Senior Bowl. Has 1st round talent and skill level, also scheme versatile like Williams. Hughes just has the dreaded character red flags you have to research more as an NFL scout.
Defensive Ends
Mike Catapano, Princeton, 6’4 270 lbs.- Another small school guy who used an all star game to impress, Catapano stood out all week at the East West Shrine Game. He possesses great instincts and snap count anticipation, he constantly hits the OL first and jolts them back, has plenty of pass rushing ability, but could bulk up to play end in a 3-4 without issue.
*David Bass, Missouri Western State, 6’4 263 lbs.- Another sleeper from Missouri Western, Bass is a sack artist. School all time leader in sacks and had a great East West Shrine week to elevate his draft stock. Has good skill set, but could really harness himself into a pass rush specialist at the next level.
Outside Linebackers
*Keith Pough, Howard, 6’3 240 lbs.- Quite possibly the most impressive defensive player at the East West week, has a nonstop motor with great instincts and smarts to get to the ball. Needs more polish and has to get stronger (looks like a bulked up safety) but the talent is there. Violent hitter with a nasty disposition on the field.
Jordan Campbell, New Mexico Highlands, 5’10 244 lbs.- True sleeper. Small school player with a world of talent but questions on and off field will follow. He may not be the tallest, but he has the speed and strength of a Division 1 athlete (he signed at Southern Cal before transferring). He plays physical and fast and with swagger. He had a great week at the NFLPA Collegiate All Star game.
Inside Linebackers
*A.J. Klein, Iowa State, 6’1 246 lbs.- I like the way this guy flies around. He isn’t the biggest, fastest, and strongest at his position, but he is a grinder. He will play every special teams and make a lot of teams better as an all around player on a 53 man, roster. Excels in the box, but has speed to get outside.
*Steve Beauharnais, Rutgers, 6’1 236 lbs.- Capped off a great season for Rutgers with a great week at the Senior Bowl. Beauharnais is a thrown back linebacker I think. He is not loud and over the top with emotion, he is steady and physical and plays the game with a subdued passion. Fast and athletic, has coverage skills to hold up in NFL.
Safeties
Jakar Hamilton, South Carolina State, 5’11 196 lbs. - Georgia Bulldog transfer who has a world of talent, but some off the field issues follow him. He had a great week at the NFLPA Game and really showed his worth as a punt returner and a defender who can play safety or in Nickel and Dime packages.
*JJ Wilcox, Georgia Southern, 5’11 215lbs.- Shorter, squattier safety who is as raw as they come out of college, he had an impressive week at the Senior Bowl after only playing ONE season of safety at the college level. Has all the athleticism and strength you like in a safety, just needs work. Worth a late round pick.
Cornerbacks
*Robert Alford, Southeastern Louisiana, 5’10 186 lbs.- Great return man in college proved he could do it at the next level with 88 yarder in Senior Bowl Game. Did a great job in man to man and has great speed and closing skills. Has a lot of potential and showed he is not afraid to play against the big boys.
*B.W. Webb, William and Mary, 5’10 183 lbs.- Another small school guy I watched at the Senior Bowl compete and beat bigger names from the college football world. Webb has great man-to-man cover skills and is strong for his size. Can run and jump and should test well at the Combine.
