I love most of what Marinelli has done with this defense but they really need to do a better job with the slot corner blitz. For the last 1/2 season or so QBs are pointing out the corner who is coming long before the ball is snapped and throwing easy passes for solid gains.

The corner lines up 2 yards to the inside of the WR and looks like a sprinter before he comes off the blocks. Seems like it would be more effective if they disguised it better. Yea it may take another 1/2 sec to get there but that has to be better than getting blocked by a tackle.

Why not have a check out of that defense when it is clear the QB is onto it? Even just having the CB drop off into zone vs the slot WR would have to add some confusion and throw off the timing of a play if the QB is looking to hit that WR with a quick pass.

It just isn't working, they need to do something to mix it up or remove it from the playbook.

I agree.

The other option would be to "look" like they're going to blitz when they're actually going to drop in coverage.

They have a similar issue with LB blitzes.

They Cowboys are not the only team with this issue Romo was calling out blitzers pre-snap in the game we was working the other day.

It's the most predictable blitz we run. The next most predictable play is both linebackers lining up in the A gap on 3rd down when we all know they're bailing out into coverage.

I'd like to see more creativity. I mean damn if you're going to run that slot corner blitz at least crowd both sides of the line and make the QB have to guess about which side the blitz is coming from.

Obvious blitzing isn't always about generating pressure with the blitz. It can also be used to change or declare protections, and occupy an eligible receiver. You have to go watch the opposing team's other games to see how they usually handle the same blitz to start guessing the DC's intent behind them.

Scandrick can blitz. Heath can too. I'm hoping Chido can learn to - he could really rock a QB

I think we've got some good slot blitzers, but when it is identified the way Eli did when Brown was blitzing, there definitely needs to be an abort option. If Brown had faked the blitz and dropped back into the underneath zone, Eli would have had to either eat the ball or find another target.

it is unusual for a CB to press cover an inside WR.
therefore when you see the slot/nickle corner on the line of scrimmage the chance of blitz gets significantly higher.
now blitzing from the short side of the field is easier to disguise.
