One of the most coveted positions to play in the league, has to be the #3 WR in Big D.

Just ask Laurent Robinson, I bet the guy fades off into mediocrity, and will never put up the numbers he did out of the slot for the Cowboys last year.

Robinson just didn't decide he was going to wake up all of a sudden now that he was a Cowboy and put up career stats in a shortened season.

Since his first game as a Cowboy in week 3, and you can take another week out of the equation if you throw in the week 5 bye, he optimized his value as a player in this league... the likes of which only a Larry Brown could be compared.

Robinsons' career stats:

ATL - 15 games played - 437 yds total for season
ATL - 6 g and 52 yds
STL - 3 g and 167 yds
STL - 14 g and 344 yds
DAL - 14 g and 858 yds

Prior to Laurent Robinsons productive season last year as a Cowboy, he was Just Another Guy, and now he really is a JAG,, kinda funny when you think about it.

Point being is that the slot position for this team is prime real estate and leaves the auditioning candidates licking at their chops for the opportunity to exploit 3rd or 4th corners and safeties in this league.

A healthy Dez, Austin, and Witten already command the opposing defenses top skill coverage DBs and scheme, and its wide open for the right WR to bust out immediately.

While Andre Holmes size 6' 4.5" and 208lbs suggests that he is better physically suited to back up Dez and Miles out wide, his speed at 4.5 40 could suggest otherwise.

Unconventional ?.... maybe,, when you look at your traditional slot WRs size around the league, but who says the Dallas Cowboys have to be conventional here.

Talk about mismatch, that would be mismatch city, and cause premature graying and ulcers for defensive coordinators that have to somehow game plan for this offense this season.

Nobodys handing the job to Holmes, he has some competition there for sure, but I sure like the thought of a more physically gifted, faster prospect in the slot this season... scary thought.

This was apparently the exact discussion the WR Coach had with Ogletree.

Look at how much money you can make if you are really all in for one year with complete effort and desire as the 3rd guy behind Dez and Miles. Those two guys may not always be 100% healthy or in the best condition but they are so dangerous you must cover them.

I dont know that Ogletree is gifted enough to take advantage but it would appear so. I dont know if he is strong enough of character and that one seems to lean the other way. But I do know Dallas as an Org. recognizes what you mention here.

Austin is going to be the slot guy, and we'd put Holmes out wide. Unless Coale ends up being the best third WR option...he seems like he'd likely be the slot guy.

The thought that O Tree has to be told this, may suggest that his best skills may not include intelligence.

I think this is an excellent post and an excellent point. I think it also means that we need a capable player in this position because the "opportunity cost" of not having a competent player at this position is significant.

It also makes the hypothetical trade of Jenkins for a guy like Percy Harvin to look like a no brainer, if Harvin is healthy.

Thats the obvious "best fit scenario", but I guess we will have to wait and see if Austin ends up in that role.
Your asking a player that is comfortable and established playing the perimeter to move into the middle.... sometimes easier said than done... and your expecting someone... Holmes as your top candidate to step in and win the spot Austin vacates?

I would carry Jenkins on my back to Minnesota for Percy Harvin.

austin has played the slot for us for years.

We've had Austin in the slot because he runs great routes and is very difficult to bring down on the run with the ball in his hands. So getting him out where he's not contained by a sideline is a big win. I don't think that changes unless our third-best WR is built as a slot receiver only. And if that happens, the guy better be pretty good, because the team really likes what they can do by moving Austin.

Totally agree, and the reason why I focused on Andre Holmes as having the best shot as the 3rd,, he could do both, its early, we shall see soon enough.

I don't know what the difference between Ogletree and Bennett is, if there is even a difference. Bennett is/was a screw-off who didn't apply his talent to making himself a valuable member of the team. Ogletree has basically done the same act. He works hard in camp against defenders he knows, but fails to achieve any advantage against opposing team defenders.

Ogletree is a cheaper option to invest more time, but the fact there are a slew of WRs on the team hoping to become #3 makes me believe the Cowboys ought to cut Ogletree and invest the time on the remaining guys in camp.

The OP is why I'm not that concerned about the 3rd WR.

I think there are a lot of guys out there who can put up good numbers because of this offense.

Hell look what happen to Crayton.
He was out number 3, and now he hasnt scratched the service with the chargers. If hes still even their.
