Romo had an astronomical franchise cap figure because QBs have astronomical franchise cap figures.

If you use voidable years to prorate the bonus on an NFL contract if you want to franchise tag him at the end of the rest of the contract the cap number for the player is all the prorated cap dollars from the voidable years, plus the franchise tag amount.

and why on earth would we want to franchise Smith? Gee, we lose the opportunity to franchise him - wow. That's tough.

The only players we franchise are those who we are wary of giving long term deals to. The underachieving (Spencer 1.0; Flozell). The older (Spencer 2.0). We'll have several years leading up to the end of that deal to give him a for realsie extension.

Because it gives you leverage in negotiations of player contracts

Jason Peters is such a beast. I still can't believe that Buffalo let him go for so little. They just continue to be the farm league for the rest of the league.

Let me see if I understand what everybody is saying here. Smith is the best at his position, at 23 he is young, entering his 4th season he is experienced, and should be locked long-term because we wouldn't want to lose him? Basically we have an elite, young superstar at the roster?

Now, why do I mention this? Wasn't Dallas in deep need of a fantastic, dominating O-Lineman for a while, and Jerry being the idiot that he is and the devil that he has been (as most here think) went out and drafted him? Does he at least get some credit when and of the things he does right? I just hate the JJ circlejerk hate around here. He has brought in the right talent at the right positions, and this is the year he brings in the right talent at the other side of the line and at the DB positions also, just watch. Romo better be ready, for 2014 is the year we go all the way!

Dallas has an option for 2015 for TSmith they need to activate this Spring. That would leave him under contract for 2 more years. The best plan would be to sign him to an extension sometime before the 2015 season. That would lower his 2015 cap hit (8m) and give them another season to amortize the huge signing bonus he will get. I think the Thomas contract is the framework, 7yr/77-88m.

No. I get it. You sign a guy for 5 years and use smoke and mirrors but still only get 5 years of play out of him.

Smith likely has much more than that.

That's why it would be stupid to write "fake" years in any fashion.

Woosh.

That's the sound of you missing the point.

not more but I think pretty close to the same amount. The way Smith elevated his game this year and his age really are big selling points.

I can see that. But somebody posted they would be at 84 at a starting point. Thats insane. Ryan Clady got a 5 yr 52 mil contract last yr.

this is Thomas' contract and in no yr is it outrageous
