Saturday PM Practice (3:50pm)1st Aug, 2009I will not be able to give too much from Saturday afternoons practice…recording a few things for the blog.

I will try and bring you an update or two along the way.

Okay, trying to play catch-up…

Couple of injury updates.

WR Isaiah Stanback is out again this afternoon with sore hamstring. I know, you’re already thinking what everyone else is thinking, “here we go again.”

Jefferson’s Montrae Holland is out today for personal reasons but should return on Sunday.

Special teams always the start of practice, today—Matt McBriar is giving the crowd a show with his monster punts…one just went over 70-yards.

He needs to say whether that's from the line of scrimmage or from where McBriar kicked it. If it's 70 yards in the air, that's good, but not exactly a "monster punt." That's about a 58-yarder.

FWIW MacMahon said it was 60 plus yards..

Edit, the first one was 60-plus, the 2nd one was 76 yards

I’m still wondering if McBriar will hit the 60-yard long video board at Cowboys Stadium.

First drills after special teams and stretching was between LB’s and RB’s (including fullbacks):

Keith Brooking with tight coverage on FB Julius Crosslin in the flat.

Earlier, Bobby Carpenter who has started well—broke up a pass to Felix Jones, seemed to be some contact when the ball was in the air.

Tashard Choice beat Bradie James on a short route in the flat.

LB Jason Williams forced a fumble away on one play, but Felix Jones just forced him to lose his jock strap.

Both Keith Brooking and Bradie James with nice coverage on short passes to Marion Barber and FB Deon Anderson.

I missed a couple of plays…but Tashard Choice always seems to look good and always full speed, beat Carpenter on a little seam route.

I think the Cowboys run that route with RB’s and TE’s better than anyone in the league. Well, okay, maybe not everyone but most everyone. Witten is the best at it in my opinion.

Here is some more; again www.smoaky.com/cowboys
you can read it there faster than i can post it, i scan about 7 different sites for cowboys news, nfl player reports etc so sometimes im a little late

Watching OL vs. DL and also the RB’s/WR’s against DB’s/LB’s…a couple of notes.

I loved watching Big Leonard Davis against Jay Ratliff…both beat each other and you can only think those two going against other makes them better. Ratliff gives us a lot of weight, probably 50-60 pounds, but his quickness can kill an offensive lineman.

Flozell went against Demarcus Ware and that’s another match-up of speed against size and strength. Not that Ware is big and strong, but Flozell did okay, and didn’t have a false start—that’s always a good thing.

Romo looks sharp this afternoon, completion to Witten on the opening play, and just hit Crayton on a crossing pattern. As I mention Witten and the seam pattern—Crayton seems to love the crossing pattern.

In the morning, Kitna found Roy Williams for a touchdown in the seam, but they just misfired on a pass in the afternoon, an out pattern that was too low.

One of the interesting parts of the pass rushing drills—the Cowboys OL are huge, the Cowboys DL/LB’s are sleek, quick, and fast…it’s the power vs. speed matchup. These new young LB’s can fly–but they usually don’t have much chance against the veteran OL and their strength, but it’s fun to watch.

Updated;

One suggestion I’ve learned about training camp is how to judge young wide receivers and offensive linemen.

You have to be careful not to get carried away with them…eventually, the veterans take control and I’ve seen way too many “training camp WR sensations,” who never made the team.

I think most Cowboys fans have gotten carried away with the various backup offensive linemen—basically none of them have done much for several years. Sometimes that due to a bad draft pick…but it sure would be nice if one of the backups would push the grizzly veterans.

Cowboys have a lot of money and time invested in Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, and Colombo, but a little push wouldn’t hurt, right?
