That drag route to Dez, where he was lined up on the left side, similar to like Fitzgerald last week, on the LB blitzing up the middle which had him WIDE-OPEN was a nice gem. It's amazing what play-calling can do.

If the FO goes out and gets some more talent on the D Line to go with Melton and Lawrence , as well as a Free Safety, I think Marinelli could accomplish so much more. You don't need great CB's with his scheme, just physical guys who will come up and tackle and won't get you killed in deep coverage.

We lack talent on defense. The good news is, we don't lack for coaching or effort. And we don't lack talent on offense except at backup QB. We'll add a lot of players to the defensive side of the ball in the coming off seasons.

For the first time since Parcels was here, we've got a plan, and we've got a fairly obvious objective ahead of us for how to make the team even better. And we've got what looks like a reasonable playoff team right now, as we speak. The only open question--and it's a huge one--is what we do for a QB since the most important position on the field is the position group with the most obvious question marks starting with Tony's age and health, and extending right down to his backup.

I couldn't agree more. The team has a lot of talent but I'm not sure if Tony will be here to take them to the promised land

I saw zero smoke and mirrors from the D today. I saw a DC mix up the blitz and allow this team to play man. The had 4 sacks a bunch of pressures and 3 TO and held a team to 14 points.

Ditto. I don't understand the happy to be unhappy crowd. We played sound and fundamental defensive football today and we will continue to improve..

Church doesn't suck. He is a premiere run stopper and probably slightly below average in pass coverage. Pull it together and you have an above average safety.

Carr on the other hand is a shell of the guy I remember playing in Kansas City and is dipping below mediocrity and becoming a liability.

Well said. The amount of flack Church gets on here is absolutely unfounded. What makes it even worse is the same people are clamoring at the feet of Wilcox who is average on his best day.

This was an easy game to like obviously, to me the difference in the team this year is that this is a team that you KNOW will put away a bad opponent. The last couple of years it was a team that you hoped would do so, but you didn’t feel it in your gut.

The 3-6 Washington Commanders say hello.

I thought it was a solid effort today defensively.

Probably the only negative I can point to is that I keep holding out hope that Carr somehow starts playing to his contract and games like this continue to show he is a below average (but not terrible) NFL CB at this point. Sterling Moore is a 4th CB or so.

Sounds like someone wants some more cornerbacks.

We played poorly for two weeks. Our QB took a good ding. It looks like we will survive it.
We have everything to play for, and 6 games to improve. Noone said the team is infallible, but you have to admit it's better than we all thought it would be coming into the season.

In all honesty if the Cowboys play their absolute best game- offensively and defensively- it can defeat any team in the NFL. If this Cowboys team plays poorly? It can be had by ANY team.

I think this is what the OP was getting at prior to today

He caused a fumble and was solid in the run game.

I'm not ripping on Selvie but run defense is a given from a 4-3 DE IMO. You need pressure from that position. Selvie had 6 sacks in his first 10 games last year and then clearly hit a conditioning wall. I thought he had the potential to do better than that this year with better technique and conditioning but instead he has one sack in ten games. That lack of development as a pass rusher is what I mean by his being a disappointment.

When I think of a smoke and mirrors defense, I picture a defense that is doing something peculiar schematically to hide a shortcoming. This defense isn't overly complex schematically. In fact, it's quite simple; they play most teams straight up. They aren't hiding a weakness, in my opinion. We know what their weaknesses are, and teams have exploited them when they've been able to.

Yeah, that's true and "smoke and mirrors" isn't the best wording. This team is playing way above the level of its physical talent and IMO that is mostly about Marinelli. I'm not sure what the right phrase would be.

That is a pretty accurite asessment of the situation. I would love to draft corner in the middle rounds that can play tight man coverage.

Our defense is certainly far from being a great one, but I'll take their physicality up against anyone else's right now.

They're starting to get a rep, and opposing players are starting to fear them.

The only thing that has me worried is the fact we have had weeks of ST mistakes whether muffed punts, blown blocking assignments. JG needs to get in the ST coaches *** and get those things fixed.
