NFL draft analysis: Safeties
Though he played just one season at safety with Georgia Tech, he's the best at his position, according to War Room scouts. (AP Photo)
Scouting report
Jerrard Tarrant
College: Georgia Tech
NFL position: Safety
Height: 6-0
Weight: 205
40 time: 4.53
Current projection: High third-round pick
Strengths: Tarrant has a lean frame with excellent arm length. Has great speed and acceleration on breaks underneath. Has soft hands and skills to make plays on the ball in the air. Nice field vision and downhill running style. Could be a punt-return man.
Weaknesses: Is a major character concern. Has average size for an NFL safety. Is aggressive but not a big hitter on contact in run support near the line of scrimmage. Has little experience as a free safety.
Bottom line: Tarrant only played free safety for one season after switching from cornerback. Still, he's dangerous with his hands and on the run, as he returned two of his five career interceptions for touchdowns. He will compete right away to be the primary punt returner as a rookie. Teams will consider him in the third round with the potential to be drafted earlier.
The only thing holding him back is the off-field incident from 2008, when he was arrested for rape. The charge was later dropped.
