This is ridiculous. Newman is one of the premier corners in this league. I would easily say top five. Maybe a few safeties surpass him. He should be higher on this list.

I have to agree, Newman at 11 is a joke and Roy Williams isn't top anything in my opinion... Nnamdi Asomugha might be top 5 honestly because he does it all well and hits like a safety.

The top breakout candidates to crack the top 25 for '09:

Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets, and O.J. Atogwe, S, St. Louis Rams. The future is bright for the Jets at corner. Revis started every game as a rookie last season and showed some playmaking flair with three interceptions and a forced fumble. He displays good technique, size, instincts, and toughness and will continue to excel in the Jets' zone coverage schemes.

Atogwe is another young player with smarts and good instincts. He plays deep coverage in the Rams' scheme and has benefitted from the pressure fronts they play. He has improved greatly on his read-and-react skills and began showing a great break on the ball last season. He ranked second in the NFL with 8 interceptions and tied for eighth in the league with 20 passes defensed. Experience will just make him better.

this is just further evidence that despite all the negative talk about how his play has declined, a lot of people think that Roy is still a very good player..

the PFW guys ranked him the 17th best overall safety out of 64 starters, and the Sporting News ranks him in the top 20 best overall defensive backs..

On a separate note, how well did Landry really play last year? I was under the impression that he was a disappointment early on and that he showed signs later in the year. Does anybody with any objectivity have a report?

Landry played pretty well for a rookie. He played better once being shifted back to FS from SS and by the time the playoffs rolled around he was playing well.

Although, I do think the Seattle game just happened to be his day and that he isn't as good as that game made him look... I still think he's going to be one of the top safeties pretty soon.
