Draft Dish: Washington's Jack Locker top dual-threat QB in 2011 class

There are a lot of athletic QBs at the college level, but there aren't many who can make game-changing plays with their feet as well as big throws on the run. And most of those are real projects.

Here are the top seven quarterbacks in the 2011 draft class who have the elite athleticism to play a Vick style of game (* -- underclassman):

2. Cam Newton*, Auburn
Newton is 6-6, 247 pounds, another tall QB with excellent strength and speed, probably in the 4.5 range. Newton also has a strong arm and can make every NFL throw with ease. His mechanics need a lot of work -- especially going through progressions and getting rid of the ball quicker. His delivery is deliberate, which allows defenders to close on the ball easily.
Though Newton's physical tools are comparable to Locker's, he's not as developed as a passer and there are questions about his character. Projection: First-round pick

3. Terrelle Pryor*, Ohio State
Pryor (6-6, 233) is an athletic QB who has shown the ability to make big plays with his feet. Though he doesn't have the rare arm strength displayed by Locker and Newton, he has a strong enough arm to make every NFL throw. He understands he must develop his mechanics to become a productive NFL QB. Pryor likely will return to Ohio State for his senior season. If he improves as much in the next year as he has in the past year, he could end up as a first-round pick. Projection: Second- or third-round pick

4. Colin Kaepernick, Nevada
Kaepernick (6-4 3/4, 219) has excellent size and rare athleticism. He has been timed in the low 4.4's in the 40-yard dash. His footwork and mechanics are raw and will need to adjust to playing in a more traditional passing offense. He has a strong arm to make all the throws and can be accurate when he does everything correctly. Kaepernick is an intriguing prospect, but he must improve a lot as a pocket passer to make it in the NFL. Projection: Third-round pick

5. Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M
Despite being benched during this season after regressing as a passer, Johnson (6-5, 243) is an interesting developmental prospect because of his excellent size, arm strength and athleticism. As a junior in 2009, Johnson showed the athletic ability to make big plays with his feet and with his arm on the move. But his footwork, mechanics and delivery are so slow and raw that his accuracy is inconsistent. Projection: Seventh-round pick or undrafted free agent

6. Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech
Taylor (6-0 3/4, 213) probably resembles Vick the most when it comes to size and athleticism. Though Taylor has improved his ability to find open receivers and make accurate throws, he is a long way from being able to throw successfully at the NFL level. If Taylor doesn't develop as a passer, a team could try to convert him to wideout or running back. Projection: Priority free agent
