Snapping the Ball With 1 Second on the Play Clock?

Why does Romo wait until 1 second is left every single time to snap the ball? This is maddening to watch. Do not understand it at all. For one, the defense also knows that with only that much time left, that a snap is coming and they can get a step on us. Just snap the ball! He seems to get too cute at the line pre snap. :bang2:

To the mods, can we sticky this or maybe put it on a FAQ that we can then refer to. It seems like it comes up every two or three days.

P.Manning does it "he's reading the defense"
T.Romo does it "he has no clue what's going on, snap the ball"

Before I read your post, I was thinking the exact same thing.

it was just sad to see costa oblivious to the delay of game...everyone stood up he was there still ready for the cadence.

There more than a couple times that the ball was snapped before the playclock was at 1 second, so this argument can be put to bed.

This

If you haven't noticed, he's often making checks/changing the play, or telling half the team where to line up.

That's all well and good.. but leave a few seconds so the defense has to guess a little bit at least. When you consistently run the play clock down to one, the defense has a step on you. Its something i've noticed as well and we do it far too often. No reason we can't get the play in a little bit quicker or line up a few seconds earlier to give us the time we need to make adjustments.

That was embarrassing. He literally had no clue what the playclock was at. Romo was screaming for him to snap it for about 2 seconds and then when it was too late and the whistle had blown, he was still in his stance waiting to snap it for a few more seconds :laugh2:

How do you lose focus like that? I don't care if you're a rookie or 10th year veteran.

I get NFL Redzone, so I get to see parts of all the games, and all QB's do it. Maybe not as often, but they all do it. It's part of reading the defense, trying to get them to show their hand, and making adjustments. What has hurt the Cowboys over the years, is not having a center that was good in shotgun, whether it be working in sync with Romo, or making good snaps.

As for the defense, anybody on the DL better not be looking up at the playclock. They're watching the ball. I suppose a LB could look at the clock and try to judge when to start, but he typically moves early, and shows his hand. It's not like Arena League, when you see someone coming in full speed toward the LOS (yeah, I know that's offense, but you get my point). I want those guys to jump early, so I can see who's coming from where.

As raw as our OL is, they need all the time they can to try to read what the defense is doing. Unfortunately we're just not at the point personell-wise, that we can just say "we're gonna run what we want to run, when we want to run it," regardless of what the defense is doing.

I'd imagine there's someone on the D or sidelines calling out when the playclock is running that low.

He does it to fuel people's selection bias.
