Almost made me cry the first time I saw that. I have a love for boats that's illegal in some states.

Around 2000-2002 there was a guy in the Houston area that built himself a BIG *** steel sailboat. Something in the 70-80' range, built it himself. He made one little mistake. The marine architect that produced the plans spec'ed out the cut files in 3/16" steel.

The guy built it out of 1/4". For those unfamiliar with steel, 1/4" standard mild steel plate weighs about 10 pounds per square foot, or 326 pounds for a 4'x8' sheet. 3/16" is 25% lighter.

Floated like a rock. I can't imagine how much time and money he spent over the few years it took him to build an artificial reef in the shape of a sailboat hull.

I went to 2coolfishing looking for it, but couldn't dig it up. It might have been around 2000-2001. There wasn't any video, but maybe 8 or 9 photos of it going into the water by barge crane in a canal. I don't remember the builder/owner being in the photos.

Looked just like lowering a rock into a swimming pool. It was obvious it wouldn't float and they pulled it back up. It was kind of well known because it was a big steel boat and he'd been working on it for years.

A friend from college works as a Marine Biologist down in Jamaica or somewhere in the Bahamas. A massive French trimaran named "Fat Katz II" docked one afternoon, the owners checked into the hotel, and the next morning the boat was an artificial reef. Story she sent me was that the owner's wife gets sloppy drunk, personally insults a few locals, and they went out with a cordless drill and a hole cutter. Instant artificial reef.

File this part under giving you a thousand paper cuts and then a shower in pickle juice. My friend Stacey gets to do the environmental impact study on the corals the boat crushed so that the local gov't can bill the owners of the boat for the damage it created when it sank. The study only takes a few hours of diving after the boat is raised, and the gov't impounds it as evidence. They can't even leave the island until they cut a check for the damages.

Maybe it was one of the BVI's.
