So, do we keep Flo in 2008 ?

Flo's in the last year of his contract. What do we do in 2008? He's playing exceptionally well ... and I'd hate to lose him.

But his salary of $5 mil a year is going to make a serious dent. Do we bring him back for 5 more years for $5 mil a year?

If not, will Free be ready? I just have nightmare visions of Winston Justice out there. If we make a deep playoff run, do we chance 2008 on a 2nd year LT?

The economics may prove to be severe, as I'd love to have Flo for another year while Free develops.

Anyway, it's just mid week talk. Nothing vital. I'm enjoying the ride right now.

But nothing wrong with casting an eye into the future.

Everything I've heard is that it's going to be a weak free agent class this offseason and lots of teams have money. If we can get him for a good price I'm all for it, but I'm thinking he'll want (and probably get) a lot of money.

Its a premier postion. I can't see us letting him go. Its hard to pry even marginal teams away from their Left Tackles let alone someone with the same or better talent than Flozell. I don't know about giving him 5 more years though.

Five mil is dirt cheap for a quality LT.

Couple of things. Flo is a pro bowl left tackle. He isn't going to sign for $5M/yr. It will be closer to $7-8M/yr maybe $9M. (Bigg Davis is a guard and he got $7M/yr) Besides that, Flo is 32 now and will be 33 next season. Giving him a 5 year deal will have him playing tackle till he is 38! I don't think he will be an elite left tackle at 38. If you do sign him to a deal, it better be back loaded so you can cut him lose after 2-3 years.

Not for 5 years... 2-3 years max.

I don't know if I'm ready to leave the responsibility of Romo's blindside in the hands of Free or McQ just yet. In another year or two. I don't see why not.

I agree, but unless the Cowboys come close to what others are willing to pay, Flo will walk. Well, unless he just wants to stay and the Cowboys do offer him $5-6M/yr. Of course, the Cowboys can give him as many years as they like as long as they can cut him lose after 2 or 3 without salary cap repercussions.

That's sort of how I feel. But Flo's gonna command big money. Do we commit so much money to a 33 year old player?

We're going to need that cap money for other positions.

I don't to get into the same situation as the late 90's when all our money was tied up in 5 aging players.

With the way the Cowboys do business, I no longer worry about salary cap issues. Every contract they've extended or done in the past four years has been in market range and without bogus high back end salaries. Typically each of their contracts offer a modest raise towards the end, but the money to look at is the upfront money and amount guaranteed in the first two years.

Age is obviously a factor, but they gave Rivera a $9m bonus and he was a guard. It's just about structure of the money than anything else. A four year contract that he'll never see the end of, but with a nice size SB.

You dislike Flo that much? Is he really that bad that he doesn't at least get some consideration to stay with the team? What if Colombo leaves as well? That will leave the team with no tackles with starting experience. I think Dallas at least makes him an offer and it may be a good offer. It will be up to him if he wants to leave. Good LTs are not readily available. He is a good one. Not great, but solid. A lot of teams have lesser LTs.

Yes, keep him. Although he tend to get penalized quite a bit and getting up there in age, he is still a very good player.

We could find someone who gives us less penalties ..... but we could also get someone who lets Romo get his head taken off ......

I say keep Flo.

unless he has a major injury, his level of play really slips or the price tag goes through the roof, you keep him...he is a very good player and I'm pretty sure he's gonna make the probowl again after this season

If we sign Romo and have the cap space, I say franchise him if we can't get a 2-3 year deal at a reasonable price.

No one would take the guy off us for 2 1st round picks, so I'd say that's the best option.

Honestly, that's not a bad idea - if we have the space. Ideally we'd only need Flozell for one, maybe two, more years to allow Free or McQuistan to continue to develop. The 3rd or 4th year of a contract would be just throw away time. If we had the cap space we could just franchise him, and not have to worry about his bonus counting in '09 or '10 when we cut him or benched him.

His price tag will be through the roof.

We just paid $50M for a RG. How much is a bona fide top 5 LT (penalties notwithstanding) in this league going to command?

I would seriously start hoping Free or McQ are ready unless we are ready to break the bank for Flo.
