So Garrett will be running the "Cornucopia" Offense?

Read this comment below from JJT of the Dallas Morning news. From the sounds of it, it looks like Garrett is not planning to use one offensive scheme, but rather mix a bunch of schemes together, Personally, I don't like that because (a) it smells of indecisiveness on Garrett’s part, and (b) it can only add confusion for the players, because these schemes are all so different philosophically.

Here's JJT's quote/answer to a fan's question:

Q: I imagine the playbook will not change from last year. Why would it? Why force Tony Romo to learn a new offense, especially if the play-caller didn't leave?

David Reyes, Boston

TAYLOR: I don't think you hire a coach from another team, talk about what a great offensive mind he has and then not give him the ability to call plays and run the offense. Jerry said Garrett is familiar with the West Coast offense, the timing-based passing game and Sean Payton's offense. Jerry said Garrett plans to integrate all of those offenses as well as the schemes Dallas used last season into one playbook. As I mentioned earlier, Garrett will be calling plays this year.

If some of the defensive players know both the 3-4 and the 4-3, then don't see why our offensive guys can't do the same. Besides it's not like each scheme is going to be approx 1/3 of the offense. Suspect he'll incorporate a few West Coast type stuff particularly suited for TO, etc.

I think the object will be to continue to run a balanced offense but I expect Garrett to put in some new things into the playbook to try and maximize the talent that is on this team.

JJT is speculating just like every other member of the Dallas Media.

He also said Parcells would be back.

Let's see, a West Coast offense to take advantage of TO's ability to run slants over the middle, a timing pattern to take advantage of the tight ends and crayton over the middle, deep passes to Terry Glenn ala Sean Payton's offense, and some decent running schemes to take advantage of Julius Jones speed around the corner.

What part of that offensive scheme don't you like?

I completley disagree. It sounds like a man who is cabpable of adapting to his personell. TO is not a good enough route runner to run an timing based offense. Romo's arm is good enough, but it is not the arm Troy had. And frankly, TO and Romo have never and will never get the time to work together like Troy and Mike did. If we are going to pay TO 8M...then he needs to get the ball in his hands to justify his compensation AND more importantly, to give him a chance to affect the outcome of the game. As for the rest of out weapons, whatever it takes for us to continue to put 25 points on the board...then I am all for it. Especially against good teams...I don't think we reached that number against the Giants in either game, Commanders game 2....Eagles game 2, Jags....and surprise surprise...we lost them all except the 2nd Giants game. You know, doing one thing and one thing only on the defenisve side of the ball is why we stunk in December and gave up an NFL worst 152 points in December. Retrospectivley, if we never changed up what we did on defense...what did we do in practice from week to week..and how do you expect to keep players attention, especially young players, if they were never allowed to learn new things. But anyway, I applaud a coaching philosphy that will make the opposition prepare harder to face the Dallas Cowboys on both sides of the ball.

WP doesn't want the offense to change much from last year. So, I don't think we'll see the offense chamge much from last year.

I'm not sure why everyone just accepted the media speculation that Garrett was the OC as fact to begin with.

It's not like he's combining the wishbone, the wing-T and the run-and-shoot.

Not really.

Payton came from Jim Fassel before he got with Parcells. Fassel is a WCO guy and if you watch the team in 2005, when Payton was directing the offense, they used a lot more WCO formations than they did in 2003 & 2004.

And in reality, every team in the NFL has their fair share of WCO formations and plays. Some teams like Seattle and Denver just happen to use the WCO formations and plays exclusively.

We may get out of running a 2 TE system with Garrett, but if he does what he says he's going to do, from a scheme and play style standpoint I don't see anything radically different. If there's to be confusion, it'll probably be to the players being unfamiliar with the language and the coaching staff.

I like it myself. It will be more confusing to the defenses we play.

I love it. We'll be much less predictible and Garrett will use formations that maximize the talent we have on the field.

To me, I don't think we could hear better news. From two TE's to 3 receiver sets, to split backfields, we're going to be unpredictible and difficult to defend.

The new ideas and schemes will be a handful for defensive coordinators... and we have the QB to run any of them.

Why is the cornucopia offense bad. Sean Payton ran a "cornucopia" offense and had great success with it. Mike Shannahan ran a "cornucopia" offense by take the west coast offense and and adding the shotgun and 5 receiver sets. They didn't seem to fare too badly

No offense but I feel this is pretty dumb thread. What is their to not like about this philosophy. If anything, we learned that Parcells offense was so predictable that it hurt us at times.

Is cornucopia Italian for cup of corn? Why couldn't it be a smorgasbord offense.
