A lot of folks were clamoring for the 'Boys to sign Stephen Davis last year and then nicely reminded everyone about it all season long. :)

Carolina's signing of this guy doesn't look so great now does it? And Davis isn't any "spring chicken" either. There is no guarantee he ever comes back to the level he was. And guess what? Carolina just flushed a bunch of this year's cap money down the john and possibly a bunch of future money.

Many seem to think this free agency thing is an "automatic". The fact is far more underachieve than those that even play to their previous levels of competence...

You go around handing out $15, $20, $30 million dollar contracts and some are going to blow up on you like this Davis one is with Carolina. You have enough blow up and well, you've just slit your throat when it comes to cap management.

But the fact is you pay Davis the amount of money he was paid and you end up losing a whole year on him... and you've made a crappy investment no matter how you slice it.

Funny... haven't heard from those championing Delhomme either lately... hmm, wonder why? :D

Many think running an NFL franchise is easy stuff... that just like putting together a championship fantasy team that it's a "snap".

Guess what? It ain't no snap.

Rogers for Dillon - HELL NO - Thats a second rounder.

Sorry to tell you Norsey but Dillon wouldn't make this Cowboy's team into a playoff team either.

And Dillon wouldn't be around the next time the Cowboys challenge for one either.

Just because he is hurt in Carolina doesn't mean he'd be hurt in Dallas.

Very true.

But I think it shows how easily one of these free agents signings can turn sour virtually overnight.

Like I said in my first post... running an NFL franchise isn't easy.

Of course he would be hurt. Look at his history over the past 4 straight years or more. Davis is hurt every single season. Maybe not season ending but definitely hurt. For the type of cash that Davis was asking for even the Dan wouldnt pony up on a guy who is hurt year after year.

I'd gladly eat the small cap amount Carolina will if Davis doesn't get healthy again just to get a shot at the Super Bowl like Carolina did. What good is it to be so cheap that you can't even make the Playoffs?

Tru... I think it comes down to how close you really are to being a SB contender... not a on the edge playoff team but a potential powerhouse just like NE and Philly.

If you're that close, yeah you go out and get yourself a "Kearse" and/or "Owens" or a "Dillon".

But if you're not, well you might as well save your coins instead of blowing your wad on an older player.

Dallas used this strategy perfectly when they brought in Haley in 1992 and Deion in 1995. That was smart and necessary to get this team over the top. But to blow your wad on a 30 year-old-back when you've got more holes than a pound of swiss cheese. Well that ain't too bright.

Yeah, but no one thought Carolina was a team that only needed one player as well. Weren't they 5-11 the year before they went to the Super bowl? Dallas needs a running game in the worse way. It's time to get one back.

Yes, but Carolina had building blocks in place that we don't have. Namely, they had a young and potentially excellent DL that matured in one season and they had better skill players than what we've had... not including Davis.

What you're not happy with Eddie George? Gosh, I thought everyone was, at least it seemed to be back in July when we signed this thief.

I wanted Duce Staley in the offseason and Corey Dillon if we couldn't grab Staley. I wasn't happy with George, I was happy that we at least had another option at RB in case Jones was injured or a bust.

You are right, NEVER pay the going rate for a high profile free agent, you can do it all with the draft, especially as well as we have done with it?

So by your logic, we shouldn't spend money on free agents because if they get hurt, it was wasted money on your cap. The same can be said of draft picks, JJ is a waste of money for us because he is hurt and will be hurt for most of the year. We should not have signed Campbell and Glenn last year because look at them now, they are taking a chunk of our salary cap while nursing injuries. Not a very smart move, don't you think?

Unless you can forsee the future, how can you ensure that all the players you bring in won't get hurt. Or did you know since last year that Davis would get hurt this year and be out for the reaminder of the year.

If you can foresee the future, can you pick some lottery numbers for me?

Obviously you neglected to read the whole thread... here is how I responded to Trublue...

At least I think that spells out where I am on free agency and it does differ from the argument you are putting forth as being supposedly my position.
