NY Jets star charged with pot possession after Hanover traffic stop
BY ABBOTT KOLOFF • DAILY RECORD • December 4, 2008
HANOVER — Police charged New York Jets defensive lineman Shaun Ellis, a team captain, with possession of marijuana, driving without insurance and speeding after a highway traffic stop over the past weekend.
A Hanover Township police officer made the stop Saturday at 8:37 a.m. after Ellis allegedly approached a police car from behind at high speed on Route 287 South, pulled even and briefly slowed down, then passed the police car and exited onto Route 24, police said.
Capt. Shawn Waldron said in a statement that Ellis — listed as Mashaunda Ellis of Williamston, S.C. — was “uncooperative” and refused to give all of the paperwork requested by Sgt. Anthony Vitanza, who made the stop.
Ellis, 31, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound starting defensive end, issued an apology Thursday through Jets spokesman Bruce Speight.
“I apologize to my family, the fans and the organization,” Ellis said in a prepared statement. “As a captain, I set a poor example for my teammates as well as all NFL players. Although this is a pending legal matter, I understand that I have to be responsible for my actions.”
Ellis is in his ninth season with the Jets, who practice in Florham Park, and was selected as a first-round draft choice in 2000 after playing college football at the University of Tennessee. He has the longest tenure of any Jet and played in the 2003 Pro Bowl.
The Jets declined to say whether they have taken any action against Ellis, with a team official saying in a statement that the matter would be handled by the National Football League.
Jets executive vice president and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in the statement that he and Jets coach Eric Mangini had spoken to Ellis about the matter.
“He is disappointed with himself and has apologized for his actions,” Tannenbaum said of Ellis. “Personal conduct is important and an area that we stress to the entire organization. Shaun has been a leader on this team, and I am confident that he will handle this in the appropriate fashion. The legal process will run its course, and the league will handle this matter.”
NFL officials did not respond to messages.
Police said Ellis was arrested after he was found to be in possession of marijuana during the traffic stop. After he was brought to the police station, authorities said, he was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He also was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving without insurance, speeding, failure to keep right, and failure to produce a valid registration card.
According to the South Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, Ellis has more than one car properly registered in the state.
