Is Atogwe UFA now? Or does that happen at midnight? How does this work?

Rams must make decision on Atogwe's status on Tuesday

Team has to sign him, make a new tender offer or let him become a free agent

By Howard Balzer
Tuesday, June 1, 2010

The day everyone expected has arrived. Tuesday is the day the Rams have to make a decision on restricted free-agent free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe.

At the beginning of the league year in early March, the Rams elected to tender Atogwe at the lowest level of $1.226 million, rather than give him a 110 percent increase over his 2009 salary of $6.342 million. The lower tender meant the Rams retained right of first refusal, but there would have been no draft-choice compensation had Atogwe received an offer from another team prior to the April 15 deadline.

Once that date passed without an offer, June 1 became the next important day on the calendar. The Rams have insisted they want to sign Atogwe to a long-term contract and negotiations have occurred since before he was made the franchise player in 2009. The Rams remained in contact with Atogwe’s agent, Ken Landphere, during the holiday weekend.

However, it has been clear the two sides are in disagreement over the value of a good, but not great, safety, and one who is coming off shoulder surgery and will turn 29 on June 23.

If there is no agreement on a new deal Tuesday, the Rams have until 11 p.m. St. Louis time to increase his one-year tender to $6.976 million, a salary that would be guaranteed as soon as Atogwe signs it. If the Rams decide not to tender him at that level, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Several teams have been rumored as having interest in Atogwe, including Miami, Detroit, Dallas and San Francisco. It remains to be seen what value other teams place on Atogwe, but the Rams are hoping that value will be in line with theirs and that Atogwe will give them the opportunity to match the best offer he gets.

The Rams’ in-limbo ownership situation does not appear to be a factor in the efforts to re-sign Atogwe because a contract for him was part of the overall budget set heading into the new league year. Of course, the value of that contract is in line with what the team believes he is worth.

OTAs continue

The Rams enter their third week of OTAs this week, with practices scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Wednesday and Friday sessions will be open to the media.

O.J. Atogwe: Rams, Atogwe to continue to negotiate
O.J. Atogwe - DB - STL - Jun. 1 - 8:04 am et
Brian Stull of ESPN 101 in St. Louis expects the Rams to continue to negotiate with O.J. Atogwe once he hits the free agent market tonight at midnight.
Stull indicates that both sides are keeping their options open, with Atogwe not necessarily upset that the Rams tendered him so cheaply. Still, it doesn't sound like St. Louis is willing to meet Atogwe's asking price on a long-term deal. We'd bet on him landing with the Dolphins, Jaguars, or Cowboys. Jun. 1 - 8:04 am et

Article XIV, Veteran Free Agency, Section 2: Restricted Free Agents (page 61)

(h) Signing Period...

(i)(i) In the event that a Restricted Free Agent has not signed a Player Contract with a Club within the Signing Period in the League Year following the expiration of his last Player Contract, and if the Prior Club by June 1 tenders to the Restricted Free Agent a one year Player Contract of at least 110% of his Paragraph 5 Salary (with all other terms of his prior year contract carried forward unchanged) or extends the player’s Qualifying Offer, whichever is greater (the “June 1 Tender”), the Prior Club shall be the only Club with which the player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract during the period from June 1 until the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season, at 4:00 p.m. New York time.

If the player’s Qualifying Offer is greater than 110% of the player’s Paragraph 5 Salary (with all other terms of his prior year contract carried forward unchanged), the Club may withdraw the Qualifying Offer on June 15 and retain its rights under the preceding sentence, so long as the Club immediately tenders the player a one year Player Contract of at least 110% of his Paragraph 5 Salary (with all other terms of his prior year contract carried forward unchanged) (the “June 15 Tender”).

How does Jerry pay Atogwe before he pays Sensi? How does he afford to pay both? I think they are going to get comparable contracts. I just don't think you can have those contracts tied up in Safties. Esp, when Spencer is coming up next year and Ratliff is sure to get a new deal in the next year or two.

Dont be too short sighted. Most teams are managing their payroll as if the cap will return. Jerry has said as much. So no cap this year, but are you sigining him to a long term deal, how does that work.

As an FYI, since there is not cap this year and Jerry has said he wants both Miles and Sensi to stay, why is he negotiating over dollars. They ($) still matter.

I think you answered your own question. If Jerry signs Atogwe, there's a pretty good chance Sensabaugh won't be re-signed after this year, unless he's willing to take a moderate 3 year deal.

Lost. Jerry already stated that he viewed Sensi as a long term cowboy.

He also said WR wasn't a real possibility in the 1st round this year...

Smoke trail and you fell for it. How much time did they invest learning Dez? And some it was in the press. Like the dinner Jerry had with him.

Those two situations are no where close to each other.

If you actually read my original response to you, you would know that I said Jerry COULD sign both if Sensabaugh agreed to a fair, 3 year deal. I think any longer contracts for Sensabaugh would be a mistake on Jerry's part. The guy is a good player who will never be great.

We are definetely interested in Atogwe so that can no longer be dismissed.

Will the money be right is the question that determine if he plays here or not.

I'd give him a big contract and just frontload the crap out of it.

Uncapped year baby!

Is the dude even healthy enough to play? Anyone? Buuuehler???

I do not feel as if the validity of Jerry Jones' past comments concerning Sensabaugh (long-term contract) and Bryant (draft selection) can be equally judged as the same. On the one hand, Sensabaugh's future is being debated by Jones & Co. internally based primarily on his 2009 performance. This is a tangible consideration.

On the other hand, the likelihood of Bryant dropping as low as he did during the draft wasn't a very strong or widely held perception prior to the draft itself. For all intents and purposes, Bryant was the only wide receiver whom the team would have targeted in the first round (or within the first three rounds for that matter).

Judging both sets of comments, I would believe that Jones' pre-2010 season comments about Sensabaugh have stronger validity than those he made concerning Bryant before the draft. Just my two cents.

Just don't see Jerry jumping into the bidding for him. Think the defense with Ball or Hamlin or AOA will be just fine.

This is what I want to know. Everyone seems to assume he is going to go right back to the high level he was at before the injury. Is he really going to be able to overcome a serious should issue so easily? I have to say that I'm a little timid throwing big money around at a guy who is coming off a major injury.

I read it. Just interpeted it differently. Its all good. We shall soon see. I'm not sure going after a 30 yr with a recent injury is all that good of an idea. The old adeage is you don't pay age. However, the FO has been money lately. So, I'm on the FO bandwagon for now.
