So, our D is game-planning for Minnesota

Several reports from DC.com confirm that Dallas’ defense is game planning against Minnesota’s offense for the upcoming preseason game tomorrow.

I like this from the standpoint that the system is new and practicing planning, implementation and execution is necessary. It will also allow us to see how far, really, the defensive players have come to learn and play within the system. So if that play poorly – and I hear starters will play at least a half - then that will be a very bad sign.

But what about our offense? Does anyone know if they’re game planning too? And what about Minnesota, has anyone heard if they’re game planning for us at all?

From the DMN:

Ryan said he thinks the first-team defense will play much better against Minnesota because this is the first preseason contest they’ve game-planned for, getting a look at the Vikings’ offense from a scout team.

Also, Ryan has reduced his defensive package to a select number of looks.

I don't think you should take this to mean they are fully implementing a game plan, just that they've practiced and ran plays against the Vikings' scheme.

I think about game-planning as putting in the full scheme Dallas would use to stop a team. I don't think we'll see that. I don't think there will a bunch of exotic blitzes or coverages, just more understanding of what to expect from the Vikings' offense.

i agree i do not think we will see a full game plan in place. we could be like the chiefs game tonight. where the defence comes out flat and give up two easy touchdowns on the first two drives.

Yeah, 3rd game is the dress rehearsal and the starters more or less sit out the final preseason game.

The D will play better simply because they're not facing the Chargers' offense this game.

This is true. San Diego has a really good football team, but they somehow manage to blow it in Dec/Jan every year.

They manage to blow it in September and put themselves into a huge hole that they have to dig themselves out of come December/January.

Can't say I like this at all. Learn the freaking playbook guys, all the packages is what makes this D confuse the opposition.

I believe they mean for the game. Rob will give different looks in different games so teams are caught off guard.

Its not just about learning the play book it is about learning to execute each of those plays together as a unit. You cant expect them to do that for the entire playbook in 4 weeks.

He's not taking away all the packages. He's just using specific ones during this game, likely to see how the defense runs plays geared more toward the offense it's facing.

There's another article with Brooking or someone quoted as saying that. That this defense is complex to learn, but during the season, they will use specific parts of that library of playbooks for each game.

True. They have such a tough passing offense to stop, which is why I wasn't too down about how we played defensively (especially considering we were playing without our top two corners under a new defensive scheme).

So what does this mean if our starting defense gets shredded?

That they still have not learned the defense or that our defense just flat out sucks?

Actually they blow it early on. Before a loss to Oakland this year in December, they had gone something like 4 years without losing in December.

No, I think that was in 2006 during the season.

Yeah it was, it was middle to late in the season when he had the meltdown. #classic.

The Cardinals played the Bears the 3rd week of the preseason, which is why he kept saying, "The Bears are who WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!"

He was right. Arizona should have won that game and gave it away.
