The sad thing is that the Cowboys do have a talented roster. But so do most of the other teams in the NFL. The difference is the premiere teams in the NFL have superior coaching and scheme advantages over all others, which provides them with a winning edge.
On offense, Dallas doesn’t have the playmakers necessary, other than CD to create mismatches; and with the lack of a consistent running game, it isn’t difficult for opponents to make Dallas one-dimensional. And we all know when that happens Dak presses and that leads to poor, panic throws and interceptions.
I remember early in the offseason, Brian Schottenheimer saying that they were going to make their opponents defend the entire field…I haven’t seen that at all. I see check-down throws to RBs and short routes to WRs and TEs relying on YAC…Dak rarely stretches the field with vertical routes. With a young OL, why not roll Dak out on the edges…we all saw the pocket collapsing several times during the NO game.
Defensively I don’t see that Zimmer has made much of a difference…if memory serves, Zimmer took a lot of heat when he was DC here during his first stint, for not blitzing and creating pressure. During the NO game the defense was sluggish and could not match the physicality of the Saints OL…they could not get off blocks and were not flying to the ball. To me this is a coaching issue…and worse case a personnel issue.
But this is what happens when the owner hires coaches with whom he is comfortable; not because they are good coaches who bring with them good schemes and are innovators….the game has passed both McCarthy and Zimmer by…this coaching staff needs an overhaul in the worst way, but Jerry will never allow that as he NEEDS to be the face of the franchise. At least I’m old enough to remember those teams of the 90’s and saw what happens when good coaching, sound schemes are married to good players.
