Baltimore is 31st going into next year in regards to the cap being 5 mil under...

32 is... yes... Washington. They go into next year being 20 mil OVER the current cap...

Of course they will move some money around here and there and the cap will go up a bit, but that is really working out of a hole...

considering how high the cap is now, thats just amazing

they'll get under it and probably still manage to sign some mroe Adam Archuleta's and Bandon Lloyds, and Deadskin fans will still sing the praises for each and every mediocre acquisition

Read on extremeskins where a couple of posters said that once Cooley's contact is extended, and about 2-3 other players, and once Brunnell is cut, they are pretty close to getting there . . . .

They will muddle through in a fiscally irresponsible way, as usual.

Because of the Commander fiscal policies, they only have 16 players under contract for 2008 that can be cut to create more cap room. Other players, such as Andre Carter, would actually increase their cap if they were cut.

The 2008 cap will probably be around 116 mil, Washington currently has about 128 mil committed, so they need to lop 12-13 million, plus enough for draft picks (if they have any).

Here are the players and the cap savings, in millions, if they are released prior to the beginning of March.

M. Brunell 3.40
P. Daniels 2.99
S Springs 2.52
P. Kendall 1.80
C. Griffen1 .65
C. Rabach 1.45
L. Betts 1.31
K. Campbell 0.75
J. Thrash 0.73
P. Prioleau 0.73
T. Wade 0.71
D. Evans 0.70
R. Cartwright 0.68
T. Yoder 0.61
R. McIntosh 0.61
V. Fox 0.51

Total 21.13

Many of these players they won't want to part with. Plus every player cut has to be replaced by someone who gets paid, so the NET savings won't be as high as these numbers.

They are $20 million over next years projected cap with only 45 players under contract. They cant just cut 12-15 players to get to the cap because then they'd need to sign 20-23 more players with no cap space. They will restructure some guys and cut a few but in reading that thread on extremeskins it looks like this may be the year that it finally catches up with them. They will get under the cap but they won't have much to work with in free agency and they will have to let some of there high priced starters go. They have the look of a team going backwards not forwards.

S Springs could be interesting.

I think the Commanders were unhappy with him earlier this year and were thinking of letting him go. Didn't he have some issues with the coaching staff, etc.?

Maybe for a "reasonable" contract he wouldn't mind playing in Dallas to be close to his Dad?

I know he's got some years on him, but I think he's still solid. And if we are looking for a solid vet to add to the mix, maybe he fits? Again, the price would have to be reasonable, but maybe Springs would want to be closer to his Dad?

They will do their usual cutting and reworking then sign a big name FA to hugely front loaded signing bonus.

I disagree. This is not the year it finally catches up with them. It already caught up them and is what limits their quality depth. That is cap hell and it reflects in their record. The team is 65-76 since Snyder took over in 1999. They have 5 losing seasons including this year and two 8-8 years, with only two winning seasons. This is just the year they reach the 7th level of hell.

He's a "sentimental" fit with us because of his Dad. However, as you pointed out, his age is on the wrong side of 30 now. I'd rather keep Reeves, see what kind of potential Ball has, and draft a top prospect on the 1st day of the draft.

If they cut the following, the cap savings is barely 8 million.

Portis
Brunell
Jansen
Lloyd
Washington
Springs
Griffin
Daniels
Taylor

Cut all of those players, for a total caps savings of 8.175 million and STILL BE nearly 12 million over the cap

Cutting Clinton Portis would save them a whopping $100,000. Why bother?

Cutting Jansen would increase their '08 cap by $1.8M.

Cutting Lloyd would increase it $2.9M.

they will probably sign moss and samuel next year and trade away their next 2 number 1s for more talent because it will be gibb's final season.

The Commanders are the Drunken Masters of NFL salary cap managment. Except for the 'Master' part.

It is interesting to read the Skins fans' thoughts on the cap. They seem to think that "cap hell" means that they can't mathematically get under the cap.
