So What’s Behind The Safety Big-Three?
So What’s Behind The Safety Big-Three?

Who knows what to make of all these mock drafts, but a few things look pretty clear – these top three safeties probably aren’t going to be around when the Cowboys pick at No. 27. And they’re probably not even going to be anywhere close for the Cowboys to consider trading up.
Not sure what this team thinks about USC’s Taylor Mays, who would be the likeliest of safeties to fall. But Eric Berry from Tennessee is going in the Top 10 if not higher and it now appears Texas’ Earl Thomas could be that high as well. If anything, Thomas should be picked in the top half of the draft.
Now Mays might be around but even that seems to be a stretch at this point.
So who is behind them? Well, what about South Florida’s Nate Allen, who was one of the 21 players here for a draft visit. The knock on Allen is that he’s not the most physical player, although he looks like he is. Well, we’ve seen guys like that before (Umm… Tony Dixon). Still, Allen is very rangy, good size (6-1, 205) and has nine interceptions in three seasons as a starter at South Florida. And by the way, we know USF can produce solid defensive backs as the Cowboys have had both Anthony Henry and Mike Jenkins.
To me, if you’ve got a true athlete back there, Dave Campo and Brett Maxie will clean up the rest. That’s just my personal opinion.
After Allen, there’s Chad Jones from LSU. You might remember him and his dreadlocks if you watched the College World Series last year. Jones is also a pretty effective baseball pitcher. (Not that it really matters at all to play safety). But at 6-3, 220, Jones definitely looks the part as well. And unlike Allen, he’s a big-time hitter. Just go to YouTube and check out the hit he laid on Arkansas’ Joe Adams last year. Crushing.
And then there’s Georgia Tech’s Morgan Burnett (6-0, 210), who also came in for a visit last week. Burnett might lack some physical tools of the other guys but makes up for it in production, with 14 picks in three seasons who can play that centerfield position.
Just some guys to keep an eye on, especially if the top three are already gone. Not sure if those three are worthy of the No. 27 pick. Then again, sometimes you have to take the guy you want (and need) regardless where you’re picking.
