not much really...but maybe something. I tend to go into too much narrative, so I'm going to merely list points I want to make without a lot of discussion today.
1. Yes, the team we beat was awful last year and winless this year, and we had to reach down deep to beat them; however, the defense played great the entire game except for the final KC scoring drive of regulation, and while the offense and playcalling was pretty bad in the first half, Romo really threw the ball well today...this KC team did not look or play like an 0-5 team. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us defensively, and despite getting hit repeatedly all game, Cassell showed me a lot of moxie today and kept throwing great passes. I'm thrilled with the victory.
2. Winning today doesn't mean we're a good team. We might finish 10-6 with a wild-card shot, or we might finish 8-8...that chapter cannot be written by anyone yet. NY won the superbowl by barely getting into the playoffs, getting beaten soundly by Dallas twice in the regular season, and playing pretty poorly all year until the final game of the season, a loss to NE which really gave them confidence. Anything can happen, especially if we've finally found some speed at the WR position.
3. Miles Austin will never have another game like today...next game we may see the Austin who dropped a perfectly thrown td pass from Romo. Nevertheless, he must be on the field as a starting wr against Atlanta. After today and after they watch the film, you can bet your bottom he'll see a safety over the top and more cushion from CB's who don't want to miss a tackle, which will single up Roy Williams and give Crayton more room. Romo got over Miles screwing him on the INT last week, and today Romo found that he could throw to Miles even when he's covered.
4. Tony Romo probably goes relatively unnoticed today, and he doesn't deserve credit for all of Austin's yards, but Romo was extremely accurate today...he threw some great passes, and both Austin and Hurd had a chance to come down with TD's and did not. Today's game should help Tony go into the next game with a ton of confidence...it doesn't matter that it was KC...they were playing very good defense, and Tony had his best game of the season by far, imo.
5. Penalties have snuck back into the Dallas game the past two weeks...penalties snuffed out several drives.
6. Way to go, Ball...that was the worst call of the season so far. The ball was still hanging on the receiver's hand when he went in for the hit, he clearly went out of his way to put shoulder to chest. That call sucked.
7. Everyone will be down on the defense for that TD to Bowe at the end of regulation. Clearly, we were making them use up the clock, but we gave up too much too fast, and then the pass rush disappeared, and Jenkins simply got beaten while we were helping the other side when Newman went out. Let's not jump on that drive so much that we forget the incredible play by the defense in overtime, forcing the punt on KC's first possession after they won the toss, and especially that awesome 3 and out at midfield.
8. Finally, I don't know if this team will finish as a winner or another disappointment, but year in and year out, the teams that are hot early tend to cool off and usually a team that gets better during the season gets hot at playoff time. This Dallas team has never given up in a game this year like it did last year...this team scratches and claws and fights, sometimes winning, sometimes playing poorly and losing, but no one can say they aren't showing up and playing hard. They will get better, and right now I'd much rather play a team that's 2-2 or 3-2 than a team that's 0-4 or 0-5. This is the NFL and teams without a win are very dangerous teams...The Cowboys didn't just lie down today on the road; KC played a very good game on both sides of the ball.
The Cowboys are 3-2 going into the bye. No matter who we beat, the team grew today by the way they won down the stretch. It's a work in progress...no one can say we suck...no one can say we're on our way, but this team is giving us their full effort and still has a chance to put it all together, especially if Romo can play the way he did today and we cut down on the penalties.
Extra Tidbit: No doubt in my mind that Keith Brooking is the single greatest offseason move we've made in a while; you have to love the way this guy plays and the heart he brings to it. Did you see him running down the sideline on that one offensive play? That guy is teaching everyone on this team how to win.
There's lots of football to be played, and I'm looking forward to the challenge.
