Parcells Hopes Players Get Healthy Soon

Patrick Crayton returned to practice and Parcells said he hopes the WR will be ready for the Giants.

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys won't release an official injury report until Wednesday, but head coach Bill Parcells said he is hopeful wide receiver Patrick Crayton (ankle), cornerback Anthony Henry (groin), center Al Johnson (knee) and linebacker Scott Shanle (ankle) will be available for Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

Crayton returned to practice for one day last week but has missed the past four games after suffering a severe right ankle injury against the Giants on Oct. 16.

"Right now, the ankle is about 90 percent," Crayton said. "I've been running on it, but cutting will be the main test. When I make that first hard cut, that's when I'll know."

Parcells said he isn't sure what Crayton's role would be Sunday if he did play. Before the injury, Crayton was the Cowboys' third receiver and punt returner. Peerless Price has handled both duties the past four games.

"I practiced (Crayton) some last week and I'm going to try to throw him in there pretty good this week," Parcells said. "My expectations are he'll be doing at least something in this game if he looks OK. If he doesn't look OK, I won't play him."

Parcells said team doctors and trainers are optimistic Johnson could play Sunday after having arthroscopic knee surgery following the Cowboys' 24-21 Thanksgiving Day loss to Denver. Johnson's knee locked up during warm-ups and once during the game because of a piece of loose cartilage, but he was able to play.

"He doesn't have any pain," Parcells said. "He feels better. I saw him yesterday, and I'm just going to watch him today and try to go Wednesday."

Henry has been inactive in two of the past three games with a groin injury. He returned to the lineup against Detroit but played only on the nickel defense, and then was inactive against Denver four days later.

"I'm going to rest him today and hopefully everything will be OK," Parcells said. When asked if he was still concerned over Henry's availability, Parcells said, "It's been forever as it is. So yeah, I'm concerned." Shanle also missed Thursday's game because of an ankle injury. The club signed veteran inside linebacker Mike Barrow, who played in a 3-4 defense when he was with Carolina. Parcells suggested Shanle would be ready to play Sunday against the Giants. </FONT>

The gist I've been getting is that Crayton is coming along but Henry supposedly had some sort of a setback prior to the Broncos game. He was probably rushed back too soon - looked very tentative in the game against Detroit when he played in the nickel.

I guess we should hear about it today if they practice.

Al Johnson must have an incredible pain threshold if he can play after his knee locked up. I've had grown men come to emergency in tears with the same issue - to play football the same day is quite remarkable.

He also knows that if Gurode starts and plays well, he might not see the field again this year.

The only thing I can say about this is there must be some reason Gurode almost never sees the field.

I think the Cowboys' biggest problem running the ball is the lack of cohesion - we've got 3 new starters compared with last year and the their talents do not mesh well right now. Johnson and Rivera are guys that like to move and make blocks in space but Allen is a mauler - that limits runs up the gut. The TEs and FB have not been making good blocks on the perimeter and that has nullified the outside running game.

To shore things up next year I think we should bring in a good lead blocking FB (Polite isn't cutting it as much as BP likes him). I also think it might be best to part ways with Allen and bring in someone else who doesn't limit us offensively the way he does with his lack of lateral quickness. We should probably draft a few OL. Lastly, we should bring in the best OL coach money can buy.

Hudson Houck is doing a pretty good job with Miami's O-line this year. They were horrible last season. Think he might have signed a long-term contract with the Fins though.

He pretty much turns around every OL he gets involved with - ditto for Alex Gibbs. It is probably the one position in football where coaching matters more than talent.

Read somewhere that Parcells is worried about Henry being able to play--but, I sure hope that he does.....

i get the feeling Henry's injury may be more of a problem than most thought. we really need him on this defense if we're going to have any chance, no offense to Glenn. Henry was FA money well spent. Crayton was a freebie, and i sure hope he can return to his clutch-catching ways (other than the drop caused by Taylor) to give Bledsoe more of a comfort zone. and no more injuries please!!!!!

You cant coach guys with slow feet that get a lot of penalties. The talent has to be there, and the ability to learn. I consider learning a talent, maybe im wrong. But to be a good lineman, or any position in the NFL, you have to learn and be smart. Coaches dont win games

It's been a tough year so far.

Gone for the year:

Flozell Adams
J Beriault
K Thornton
Al Singleton
Dat Nguyen

Missed considerable playing time:

A Henry
Julius Jones
P Crayton

Is it just me or do there appear to be more and more injuries every year in the NFL? Some teams have been hit way worse than us.

A bucket handle tear that creates a lock up would be a long term injury. A loose body that causes the knee to lcok is a different story. Removing it is nothing serious. He should be at 100% game time.
