So what really needs to be secured for a deep and protected dominant defense, now?

Coming into the 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys cornerback room looked like one of the strongest position groups on their entire roster. The biggest boost to the group came in the fact that Dallas was returning their number one cornerback, Trevon Diggs, after he missed nearly the entire 2023 regular season with an ACL injury.

The Cowboys were set to pair Diggs with All-Pro DaRon Bland, creating what on paper looked like the best cornerback duo in the NFL. To make the position group even deeper, the Cowboys re-signed slot cornerback Jourdan Lewis in free agency and spent their fifth-round pick on Wake Forrest cornerback Caelen Carson.

Dallas appeared to have one of the strongest and deepest cornerback rooms in all of football. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, nothing has gone according to plan. The bad news for the cornerback room started two weeks before the beginning of the regular season when DaRon Bland broke a bone in his foot, forcing him to miss significant time.

There is the need for one more new, youthful, and very talented cornerback to protect this element in a pass dominant NFL

Number one but can come either in free agency or in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft.

Next in importance, is the defensive line for a truly dominant team. Dallas has leadership and dominance in depth at defensive end. It has some still young and still evolving defensive tackles and their contracts should stabilize this element for the short projection.

A really good defensive tackle needs some time to dominate and live on his own instincts. The best way to add this still needed element is to pay out in free agency and add a three year piece. Free Agency here you come. Stephen can't speak over Jerry the DC.

Fact is, Jerry, this is your one piece needed to elevate the entire team's product.

The rest of the box needed is linebacker. It is a good group, but I would resign all involved now, and add the very best middle linebacker in the draft, now. Overlap and learning need to stabilize this group for about five seasons. This is a very good group like the cornerback group and getting healthy is necessary as well. Good medical and Jerry pays a ton for his team staff.

The team always builds offensive linemen development for offense, but speed and break away dominance are still a need.

The Cowboys need a difference maker at running back and receiver.

That then becomes CB, LB, DT, RB, and WR...via the free agency and draft.

I would get the defensive tackle up front in free agency.

I would strongly dabble with running back, wide receiver, and linebacker with the first three picks in the draft now.

When battlefield effectiveness change, one has to overcome them. Even if they are simple, primitive, and over powering. Owner, GM, or coach...the players have to be provided leadership. If this is element is a problem, that has to be overcome...and not just by prayer. Players don't become leaders but on the field.

Offensive leadership and lack of discipline rests in the hands of the head coach. GM's all should be fully aware of such statuses.

The only cornerbacks under contract heading into 2025 for the Cowboys: - DaRon Bland - Trevon Diggs (knee injury) - Caelen Carson Cornerback is in serious consideration for Round 1 of the draft. #DallasCowboys

Unless they have a shift in philosophy, it will be hard for the Cowboys to bring back Jourdan Lewis, who is a free agent at season’s end. With how he’s played this year, Lewis will almost certainly be offered a multi-year contract worth more money than the Cowboys will be willing to match. If Lewis does walk, Dallas would be down to just Bland and Carson as their starting corners until Diggs returns from injury late in the regular season.

After the performance he put on display this season, it would be very hard to envision the Cowboys trusting Carson enough to enter the season with him as one of their starting cornerbacks. If this is the case, it will almost force Dallas to spend one of the first three draft picks on a cornerback or acquire a starting-caliber corner that can play outside in free agency.

spend real money in FA on a DT and draft one in the first RD. The TOP DTs picked if they are going to be good will show it right away and produce. DE might be a need as well.
Then serious UPGRADE at LB. FA frankly again. Kendricks is getting gray; and Vigil is meh. Overshown might never be all the way back and he has been seriously injured twice. Marist is looking good but really that is all we have for both now and the future. So we need at least TWO LBs there.
CB gonna have to get at least one there
and as ALWAYS we need to upgrade at Safety
Making this a championship D will take at least two offseasons of serious work on it

We need atleast 2 more alpha personalities with the game to match. It's that simple. Until you get that you will see us shrink in December on defense when bullys come to town.

Coaching still matters. I'm not convinced the Cowboys have the defensive coaches needed for a dominant defense.

Cowboys are still in need of a War Daddy DT, DE, S, a couple of LB's and a top flight CB. 6-7 good players would make a huge impact.

Can fixing the defense be done before September? YES. It would require Jerry spending money on coaches and in FA though. So......

That's funny. But who are these magical defensive coaches you speak of? Name 2 who excelled with dts and linebackers on the level of our players

I like your emphasis on a dominant D!

Of course Mahomes is a great QB, but KC has a very good shot at 3 peating because they have the BEST Defensive Coordinator in Football, and the BEST and MOST PHYSICAL Defense in football.
How many times has Mahomes offense won a game when scoring less than 20 points? More than ANY other team!

I wish Jerry would focus on putting together a DOMINANT D this off season. We need a dominant D to have any chance at all if Dak is our QB.

Jerry, find a way to get rid of Dak!!!!!!

First and foremost, we need a nasty DT, one that can dominate the point of attack and disrupt the offense, one that doesn't get pushed backward every other play.
Dominant D lineman are WAY more important than dominant corners. We need a couple big agile run stuffers at DT!

Is there such a thing as a dominant CB? I would say hel_ no, except Deon in his day.

A playmaking stud safety that plays all 3 downs well, a dominant DT, a tackling machine LBer, one of our edge guys to grow into a really good pass rusher opposite Micah and health

In round one, at pick 12 or 13, you take the highest rated player on your board, period. It is likely to be OL, WR, Edge, S, or CB.
If you don’t like that, you trade down, but Cowboys missed Jalen Ramsey because they weren’t sure if he was a CB or S,having played lots of S in college; they missed on TJ Watt because they weren’t sure if he was a stand up 3-4 OLB or if he could play down DE in 4-3. Don’t think so much, take the highest rated player on your board early in round 1. Great players are always welcome. Worry about needs later.

Lewis

He originally joined the organization at their third-round pick in 2017 and clawed his way from a rotational role under then defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and passing game coordinator Kris Richard to that of a starter, going on to become the team's lone ballhawk in the pre-Trevon Diggs and pre-DaRon Bland era.

He is a Cowboy and deserves his earned contract now.

The Cowboys have two of the better cornerbacks in the NFL in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. However, for the second consecutive year, Diggs has had to be shut down with an injury. Bland is back playing at the moment, but he missed 10 games this season with a stress fracture in his foot. Jourdan Lewis is having one of his best years ever. Caelen Carson has some promise, but he hit a rookie wall before being put on injured reserve with a shoulder issue.

Although Diggs will likely be ready for when the next season starts, and Bland will have a full offseason to get back to himself, there's still quite a bit of uncertainty at the cornerback spot in Dallas, that makes drafting a cornerback a big-time priority for the Cowboys in April.

I mean, even bland was out. This team got screwed this season almost as bad as Detroit.
