(4:00 PM: Not much settled in early games ... With Denver, which would have the #2 pick at the 2011 draft if it were held today, still to play today, not much was settled in the early games regarding the final first-round selection order for the upcoming draft. Losses by Cincinnati and Buffalo, though, at least mean that the Bengals will pick no lower than 3rd while the Bills will pick no lower than 4th.
(9:00 AM): Pair of top RBs enter draft … Junior RBs Shane Vereen of California and UConn’s Jordan Todman both announced late last night that they will be skipping their senior seasons and entering the 2011 NFL draft. Vereen is considered to be a late first or early second prospect, while Todman is a later second day possibility.
(12:01 AM): Draft order down to wire … While Carolina has already wrapped up the #1 pick at the 2011 draft, the rest of the early picks for this year’s lottery are still up for grabs as the NFL heads into the final week of the regular schedule. Denver, which currently has the 2nd pick overall were the drfat held today, will be home to San Diego, while Cincinnati, which would pick 3rd, will be in Baltimore and Buffalo, with the 4th selection, will be at the Jets in New York. Meanwhile, the 5th and 6th picks could be decided when Arizona plays at San Francisco. The full, final updated first-round selection order will be posted after tomorrow night’s game in Seattle against St. Louis.
Top senior QB hurt again … After battling an elbow injury all season, Florida State QB Christian Ponder was able to start last night’s Chick-fil-A Bowl against South Carolina, but suffered a concussion in the second quarter and did not play again. And it was hardly the kind of college finale that Ponder wants pro scouts to remember as he completed only one of 5 pass attempts for 6 yards when he was in there. Florida State held on though and defeated South Carolina 26-17 to finish the season with ten wins.
More invites to Mobile announced … The Senior Bowl has announced that TCU QB Andy Dalton, who led the Horned Frogs to an unbeaten season this year, has accepted an invitation to participate in this year’s all-star game. Dalton will be joined in Mobile by TCU WR Jeremy Kerley. Meanwhile, the Senior Bowl has also revealed that Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn, DT Christian Ballard and QB Ricky Stanzi will also be attending this year’s game. There is a good chance that Clayborn could be the highest-rated player for the 2011 draft in Mobile this year.
