I can't claim to understand all the differences between playing SS and FS, but would it be possible for the Cowboys to see Beriault at FS? He seemed to have good range and a nose for the ball in the limited action he saw in last year's preseason.

I think Keith Davis gets moved to backup SS by midseason. Beriault surprises and starts at FS midseason. Watkins comes on strong and finishes the season at FS. Hahaha...that's my convoluted prediction...

oh yes...one more prediction...coleman is released early in the season...

SS has evolved into a far different positon that what it was in the 90s. you wont be able to convert a 6th round draft pick from SS to FS. SS is groomed to lay down the law in modern football and does not have as much to do in coverage although they do it a little bit (mainly they cover TE's, earlier they used to drop into zones) Beriault will not make the conversion and will probably battle for a roster spot.

Plus if Watkins can cover deep Roy Williams is the equivalent of about 3 guys when he moves up in the box.

I personally can't make a prediction and fully think this is going to be one of the most interesting battles to watch in TC this year.

Berry-O is a long shot just to make the final 53 due to his injury. Anything we get out of him would be a bonus.

Are we sure that Beriault can't make the transition?

From Cowboysplus last year:
"What about him? He started 45 of the 46 games he played and had more than 100 tackles every season. He was a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection, who the Cowboys believe can play free or strong safety."

"Instant analysis: Had a 39 1/2-inch vertical at the combine and he has the ability to change direction well … Doesn’t have a lot of upper body strength and doesn’t have a lot of range in coverage. "

"Has good hip flexibility and quick feet, showing the ability to change direction smoothly … Smart and instinctive player who reacts quickly and makes proper reads, especially in run support … Shows adequate vision in the passing game, doing a decent job of sniffing the ball out in front of him … "

"4.15 20-yard shuttle "
"4.59 in the 40-yard dash"

another site:
Had a complete workout at the combine. Ran his 40s in 4.52 and 4.57, had a 391/2-inch vertical jump, 11-foot long jump, 3.80 short shuttle, 10.82 long shuttle, 6.92 three-cone drill and did 14 reps.

Oh well...I guess I just like what I saw out of him during TC last year...In watching Watkins' highlight real, he looks like the kind of center-fielder we need at FS. However, his change of direction doesn't seem very good. Anyone have Watkins' short shuttle times? Should be an interesting TC battle...

Edit:
Pat Watkins

had a 4.08 short shuttle and a 6.83 three-cone drill

If Coleman makes the team at all he will start. If he has declined to the point that he can't be the starter then we have no use for him and we will cut him and let Davis start the season. Either way Watkins will take over around game #6.

I agree with this, Coleman either starts or gets cut, one of the two. Odds are he gets cut and makes room for a kickoff specialist, lol.

I think Davis and Coleman will be our starters...Watkins will have to earn the trust to play...he'll mostly be a special teams performer until earning some deep safety time in the nickel.
