Is something up here??? Why would the Cowboys let the whole NFL world know the interest in Tyron Smith 2 1/2 weeks before the draft??? Are they up to something? Maybe Tyron is not the guy they crave. Who is it really??

Who knows? Maybe its all smoke. Maybe they just really want to trade back. A few months ago everyone said they liked Prince, then Watt and Jordan, then Tyron Smith and know Aldon Smith too. Who also likes these players. Detriot is said to be high on Tyron SMith and Prince. Houston said to be high on Prince, Jordan and know Aldon SMith. Minnisota is said to like Jordan as does San Diego and NE who also likes Watt. Could all be smoke to get these teams to trade up.

Or it could just be good insider tips. All reporters have to do right now is focus on the draft.

I think there is a about a 80% chance he is the guy they will get. I put the rest at 10% for Peterson in a trade up to 5 or 6 if he is there, and 10% to someone else if Smith is taken ahead of where we pick at 9.

Just a few months ago Smith was seen as a 20 to 32 area pick. He has busted his rear end and risen up the charts fast. His workout numbers are phenomenal for a kid so young. I'm talking 40 time, bench, vertical, all of it. If he had stayed in school he is a top 5 pick next year. Guaranteed.

So if we end up with him it is a great job. Chris in Arizona is a USC fan. Way back during the season he noted that Cowboys scouts were high on Smith. I asked and he was right. He is the most watched guy by our scouting staff in 2010. We had scouts at every game he played. In other words, we have a lot of film on him and a lot of notes.

They like the kid. In fact they like him enough to move up if they feel they have to. I am not sure they will though. They also like a lot of other guys. Chief among them are JJ Watt and Anthony Castonzo.

It isn't so much the Cowboys letting the world know how they feel as it is scouts and Draft combines doing good jobs putting 2 and 2 together. Most teams know what players the other teams are looking at already. We're the ones in the dark usually.

No matter if we get him or not, I am convinced the scouting department has done their work well and we will be in good shape whether we trade up, stay put, or trade down.

Good post Hos.

Even though Smith isn't my favourite tackle in the draft, I do like the player and would be OK with us picking him. Matter of fact, I would be okay with just about any OL player in the first round. Would mean they're finally setting out to fixing that mess of a unit

I believe it's Peterson or Smith.

Who would be the target in a trade down Hos? Watt/Carimi/Castonzo?

In a trade down I would go Castanzo. (doubt Smith will be there in that case) I think the OL is in the most trouble since we are looking having to replace three guys fairly quickly.

I would agree, I don't think this is the Cowboys letting everyone know what they are going to do. But instead, just people doing a good job connecting the dots. And really, the dots are not that difficult to connect.

#1.) OL especially RT is a HUGE hole for the Cowboys
#2.) Smith is a guy that we scouted very heavily
#3.) Most experts now agree that around #9 is the right spot for him to go
#4.) Based on where the other top guys are expected to go that would fill other needs for us, Smith is likely going to be one of the best player on the board and he also happens to fill one of the biggest needs.

None of those things are difficult to figure out, or do you need to have access to Jerry Jones or even be really up to date with the Dallas Cowboys to figure out...

I agree. I would still look at OL first in a trade down.

What abut Sherrod?, I know the Cowboys had him in for a visit, I'm torn between taking Smith and trading down a few spots for a extra 3rd. Also heard a lot of good things about Alabama's T James Carpenter, maybe in the 2nd if we like Wt or Jordan at 9?

Based on my understanding...

1. Castonzo
2. Watt
3. Carimi

That order has changed 4 times in the last 2 weeks. It will probably change again.

Is it realistic to think that if we trade down from #9, that we will trade up from #40?

I think with Jerry anything is possible. He drives me nuts, but he gambles. I do respect that about him, even though it kills me.

I can definitely see scenarios where he would move up or down from any position. If guys we want are gone, I think he'll move down. If guys we want are there I think he will move up to take them if need be.

I'd much rather just re-sign Spears and see what Ryan can do with Oshlansky than to use a high first rounder of JJ Watt.

*note, this is not a reflection on how I feel about Smith as a Prospect*

I'm not as sold that the Cowboys are as set on Smith as Hos nor do I believe this is just a good job at people putting 2 and 2 together. I know there are several other prospects the Cowboys were just as high on if not higher during this whole draft process and I find it a weird coincidence that over the last month they have shown limited interest or no interest at all in these prospects.

Sometime more is said by what's not said.

IMO, Jerry's ideal scenario is to either have Peterson fall into their laps or be offered a fire sale to move up but I think neither is likely so I go back to trade down possibilities.

In a perfect world outside of option 1 (Peterson) I'm leaning towards turning back the clocks and going with what was hot before Smith. A trade down which I know there are and will be several options available and the Choice of Smith if he is still on the board or the best OT prospect they have available. With that said, keep an eye on Castonzo.

I think Sherrod is the best tackle in this draft...hands down. He certainly is the most NFL ready.

I think that is how I would rank them also

When you say have Peterson fall into Jerry's lap do you mean fall all the way to 9? or fall to 5 or 6 and then trade up and get him?

Fall all the way to 9 which is why I also addressed possibly moving up for him but as I said, neither is likely at this point.

I'm 99% certain the Bill will take Von Miller which will probably lean Arizona towards Peterson. Trading up ahead of Arizona would be too rich.
