These are essentially hard drives that you install your os and programs on and they run faster, right?

Yea. Early on very unreliable but have gotten better.

Yeah, they're a nice upgrade for an older computer. I just replaced the hard drive on my 2009 MacBook with an ssd. It boots and shuts down much more quickly, programs open quicker, files read and write faster. They're still pricier than a standard hard drive, but the prices are continuing to drop.

Thanks for the info guys. My computer has been starting up a bit slower lately so this seems like a good solution.

perhaps a bit of overkill, however. get spybot search n destroy and ensure you're malware free first. i cleaned off my sisters laptop and it was much faster.

you can get a 1 tb 7200 rpm drive for around $60. SSD in the same size is around $500 and up.
