I heard he wasn’t great against the run, but who cares about that anyway?
Just get a lead on bad teams and run up the score for stats. Stay relevant.
Right. I don't think we got him for run defense. I think we got him to be that intermediate down-and-distance DT to primarily get after the passer. I think we'll team him with Odighizuwa in those situations.
My belief is our first-down, shorter-yardage DTs will be Mazi and possibly Toia, although because I don't know how Toia is going to turn out, Odig (who we're paying a lot) could be the primary with Mazi and Toia rotating with him at the two positions on those downs. I really don't expect to see Thomas in those situations unless we play him as a big end.
My bet right now would be DE Kneeland, DT Mazi, DT Toia and DE Turner in those situations, understanding that that is only about 30 percent of the snaps.
The rest of the time if will be DE Fowler/Ezeraiku/Williams, DT Odighizuwa, DT Thomas and DE Parsons. In some passing situations, though, we may put some of the DEs inside as pass rushers.
The only thing I can't figure out (if it works out this way) is what we do with Parsons on those early-down, shorter-yardage situations. Maybe he just plays at end and we use a player like Turner to give him a few of those snaps off. (I wouldn't have a problem limiting him to those 70 percent of other snaps, though, to keep him fresher.) I think if Parsons does play in those situations that he should play linebacker to keep linemen from leaning on him.
Of course, the main problem with that early-down lineup is that teams often choose to pass in those situations and that group of DL doesn't have much proven pass rush ability. Maybe Eberflus won't even rotate them that way. He may just play his best pass rushers (and Mazi) and rotate the others in to give them a break. It just seems we have a distinct delineation between run stoppers (Mazi, Toia, Kneeland in particular) and pass rushers (Thomas, Fowler, maybe Eze). Parsons and Odig might be the only ones good against both and their size works against them and allows them to get worn down.
