Some cold hard 3-4 NT facts

Everyone bagging on Ferguson - man thats funny!
Its a freaking thankless role

Lets look at some players historical NT's and some stats:

The great Jammal Williams - NT SD - 7 1/2 sacks last 5 years. No Sacks this year. 44 tackles this year

Casey Hampton - 4 Sacks past 5 years, 0 this year, 29 tackles this year

Pat Williams - 6 1/2 sacks past 5 years, 1 1/2 sacks this year 58 tackles playing in 4-3.....

Vince Wilfork Pats NT - 1/2 A sack

Ted Washington - 61/2 sacks past 5 years, 0 this year and 41 tackles this year

What were people expecting stat WISE from Ferguson in this scheme? Really? He's been platooned with Glover and taken out in obvious passing downs.

His stats this year - ONE Sack and 29 tackles. Not shabby compared to what the above "STUD" NT's are producing....

La'Roi Glover is probably the most popular free agent signing in years. It's to be expected that folks will expect a lot out of Ferguson, or maybe not understand the 3-4 since we've been a 4-3 team for so long.

Fergie is fine, but we need youth there. If Thomas Johnson is not the answer, we need to draft one this year as Glover will probably be gone. Kwakou Robinson would be perfect.

I'm not sure how anyone can single out one guy's play on a defense that has been owned vs the run for the past 4-6 weeks...we've been physically dominated...

No one is playing well.

Well yeah, it is...and especially to single out the NT as playing well, being that the NT position in the 3-4 is the KEY to stopping the run...

This defense has looked like boys against men vs the run in the second half of the season...

And the NT is the symbol of physical dominance on a 3-4 defense.

Sorry...Fergie ain't playin' well.

You need size in the front 7 to play this Defense. We have size in our ends (Spears/Canty).

We have James/Ware.

We need a strong big ILB and NT and OLB, then we will dominate, I promise you this.

Roy is fine where he's at. Maybe Beriault will hopefully be ready to play, or else draft or FA a FS.

ILB OR OLB. Burnett will fill one of these spots. I think he may move to ILB.

I like the 4-3 myself, but both can dominate if you have the Stars to complete the defense.

4-3 can suck with no talent as can the 3-4.

Well, we're not being schooled up the middle. And I have to agree with Nors, it's not Ferguson or the middle that is getting blown up. It's the dang edges of the field which teams are attacking.

We are getting beat on the outside. Where is the containment? Hey squiggy Zimmy, where are the creative blitzes? It's not looking good for you my man.

Teams are having the most success running to the outside. On Portis' best drive last week, I seem to remember 3 or 4 sweeps in a row all going for 8-15 yards or so. Up-the-middle runs haven't been as much of a problem. Not saying it's perfect though. JMO

were not even using the 3-4 right. its supposed to be a blitzing confusing scheme, but the way were playing it everyone knows exactly what were doing. We never blitz and we dont confuse anyone, so in that sense, I think playing the 3-4 is a waste. If we get a real DC or if Zimm/Parcells actually decide to start blitzing and being more complex than a high school defense than i'd love it.

You both hit it on the nail - the outside linebackers need to contain.

However, if a team is running a right sweep, we need our RE to push the pocket, the closest ILB to storm that side of the ball, we need the ROLB to contain his guy,we need the SS to come up and the corner to be involved.

With out everyone working together, it will destroy a defense.

Well I don't like the 3-4 Regardless..If the Cowboys play it..I'll support it...But it's still inferior to the 4-3 IMO.

Ware runs himself out of the play almost every down, he's either 10 yards behind the qb or runs straight into the LTs chest.
