mostly because I thought that after last season we were ready to take the next step. It's obviously been depressing after the 0-2 start given how well our defense played end of last year (and we returned nearly all the starters), with the breakout of Miles Austin last season, drafting Dez, etc., etc.
Maybe we still can salvage the season. But to be honest, the odds are stacked against us. It's not mission impossible, but we have put ourselves into a hole. I think going 0-3 would be the death knell for this season.
I'd also add that Wade has, in fact, been a good (not great) coach for the Cowboys over the past 3 years or so. We did manage to win 2 NFC East titles. We finally won a playoff game after a decade.
I know. As a long-time Cowboys fan (since 1976) that's not nearly enough success. And I don't honestly think Wade has what "it" takes to earn a Super Bowl trip. I keep trying to convince myself that he has what it takes. As a fan you have to keep hoping. But I unfortunately don't see it (as much as I want to).
That said, given that a strike is looming, that there may be no football next year, I can't see JJ firing Wade and bringing in an outsider at this stage. Anyone decent, JJ would have to offer a multi-year package. On top of that, JJ never has let go a coach mid-season and brought in an outsider (with or without a lockout looming). And I think that JJ also enjoys working with Wade. He seems to be more relaxed with Wade than say a personality like B Parcells (walking on egg shells). At best we would have Garrett if there's no Wade (at least for the remainder of this season if not longer). Is Garrett the next great coach? I really don't know. And does JJ have the judgement/wisdom to make that call?
I'm looking for some light at the end of this tunnel.
The best thing the Cowboys can do is try like hell to turn this around right now. The alternative is to potentially bring in a new coaching staff, possibly a new offensive and defensive system, and start not entirely from scratch, but put the team back a couple of years.
What's sickening is that I do think we have some very good players, and for whatever reason, we just aren't getting the most out of them.
During the days of Hambrick, Q Carter, Hutch . . . . I knew we didn't have the talent to win consistently. But with the guys on the roster today, we have some quality players, imo.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling. It's better to share the pain.
