Giants fans' sick Kat-calls

BY TRACY CONNOR
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Shame on you, Giants fans.

Some boorish Big Blue die-hards pelted New Orleans Saints fans with tasteless taunts about deadly Hurricane Katrina during Monday night's game at Giants Stadium, several fans said.

"Where's your swimmies? I hope you have your swimmies!" one ignoramus asked Diane Dias, 46, who splits her time between homes in New Orleans and New Milford, Conn.

"You deserve what you got," another said. "New Orleans people are stupid."

Dias and her husband bought seats on the 50-yard line on eBay so they could publicly show their support for the homeless Saints, who lost 27-10.

The NFL designated the Saints as the home team, and Dias was thrilled to see people in the stands wearing black and gold. But her excitement turned to disgust when she saw a girl from New Orleans crying in a rest room because she'd been harassed.

"We lost all interest in the game," she said. "This is the strangest situation we've ever been in."

The insults rained down even as giant television screens showed the devastation Katrina wrought and players made pitches for donations.

"There were a handful of people who were extremely nice, but overall people were hostile," Dias said.

Many Saints boosters, including some evacuees, were not verbally attacked and reported that Giants fans went out of their way to show support.

But Dias' experience was not an isolated incident. On several Web sites, Saints fans recounted a torrent of abuse.

"After I reported an obnoxious fan for exposing himself to me, my friend and I were kicked out the stadium, apparently for having the nerve to complain," read a Nola.com posting.

"One guy even said he was glad our city was under water. ... I have had to sit here for FOUR YEARS and listen to all the New Yorkers complain and expect sympathy from the world [because] of 9/11 and this is what we get in return?"

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said team officials have heard from many Saints fans about what a positive experience they had. "We are still awaiting the final numbers, but a significant amount of money was donated by the people in the stadium to the American Red Cross volunteers who were collecting on behalf of their hurricane relief fund," Hanlon said.

Simply classless...

You wouldn't even expect such treatment in Philly... fans that did THAT deserve to be in the plight of many down there...

I knew it wasn't going to be pretty when the stadium erupted in resounding boos as the Saints took the field...

Way to go Tagliabue... you screwed the Saints and the rest of the NFC East in one fell swoop... now THAT'S talent...

I loved when Aaron Brooks said "Try not to patronize us next time, [sending] us to New York and saying we're playing a home game"

I was completely alarmed when the NO team was announced to a chorus off 'boos' from the Gints fans. I figured they would at least show them a little bit of hospitality at least before the game started. I have no problem to show little respect once the game starts since this is a regular season game but to show such disrespect before it event starts (esp. in a home game for the Gints that gives them 9 total home games for the season) for a team/city that has been thru so much, pretty sad. Don't get me wrong when the game starts the fans come out and deservedly so, no problems there. But to boo this team on the opening intro's was very upsetting for me to hear. Think the Saints home fans would have booed the NY Giants starters during the pregame introductions in New Orleans during the 2001 season? no chance.

same sentiments that Haslett said when interviewed before the game. And he was completely right, this team has been thru enough and this could have been handled much better. Too bad money rules the day and Tags proved it.

I got a laugh when Haslett in that pre game interview basically said the money spent to paint the endzone with the saints name, and probably the money spent to move the team up for the game, would have been better spent on hurricane relief.

I guess SOME New Yorkers don't want to share sympathy headlines...

heh heh, I loved that. And he was right. It was pretty obvious listening to him that he was holding back how upset he really was and just made a few statements like that. Still how sorry was it to call this is "home" game for the Saints because of that, a few saints banners, the saints cheerleaders, and the halftime singers.

How about this gem from Peter King, in his MMQB prior to the Monday night game:

"SAN ANTONIO -- I love the early game tonight. Absolutely love it. I love the pomp that surely will go with it and I love the cause. I love the chance for Meadowlanders to come up very big, which I know they will do in welcoming the Gulf Coast Orphans of the Storm when the Giants and Saints meet at the very un-Monday-night time of 7:30 p.m. ET."

The guy's powers of prediction are astounding: Jake Plummer for NFL MVP two years running; Daleroy Stewart to be a major player for the Boys in the 2004 season; Danny Wuerffel to lead league in passing in Spurrier's first year; Giants fans displaying hospitality....

I sometimes wonder why they don't put King on the baseball beat, a sport he seems to both care and know more about than football.
