David Harrington, Idaho State

He had the best single-season average for a punter this year as he averaged 48.7 yards a punt. good for the top mark in the nation. He had a career-best 70-yard punt and 29 punts of 50 yards or more.

Strength is one thing. And those numbers are fantastic.

But I want to see if he can do that McBriar backwards spin that makes the ball just drop and stay there inside the 5.

Off topic, but you're quote really shows some Jones arrogance.

When someone really asks if a professional manager of the salary cap if they have cap space to afford a player, it doesn't necessarily mean that amount of cap space available at the moment, rather can we afford this player in the scheme of what we are doing in the future.

Every contract signed is just simple accounting. Way too arrogant of a response.

I think he was just making the point that the cap can be manipulated to fit in whomever Dallas wants to fit in. It's effect on the future can virtually be negated. So there's no reason to worry if Dallas has enough cap space to do what it wants.

Too many people are anxious about room while the person who manages the cap knows it's not a real issue.

He improved from a 44.7 average the previous year, so it appears that he's learning his craft.

Where did you hear about this addition pal?? This is the first I've heard of it, though I expected they'd eventually bring in some competition at both kicker and punter... especially punter...

Man, get well, Mat McBriar... we need you, son...

Edit-- never mind, I answered my own question, by reading a little further down the board... :D

In 2 years at Idaho State, he punted 125 times (they must not have had much of an offense), with the following results:

30 of his punts were downed inside the 20... that's almost one in four punts, not bad... 29 of his punts were fair caught... 17 of his punts went for touchbacks... that's like one in a little over every 7 kicks... again, not bad...

Sounds like he has a strong leg, and at least some touch with the ball... but now for the bad, and it's a biggie-- he had 3 punts blocked last year... that ain't good, it sounds like he takes a little time to get his punts off...

Good info. I thought that Jones did really well, but these are difference making numbers.

Well I am sure he will get some instruction on speeding up his kicks.

Well neither you nor I know what Jones really meant.

But the bolded part above is flat out wrong. Can you get flexibility with creativity in many situations? Sure. But there is a tipping point where flexibility is all used up and gravity will not be denied. Insert your favorite corporate day of reckoning example here.

What may be true is that Stephen intentionally stays far enough off the cap edge that he always maintains the flexibility to restructure some folks to squeeze in another player. That is just good business - but that doesn't mean 3 players, or 5, or 10.

Cap maneuverings are finite, not infinite.

If you don't believe that you are probably just fine with the federal deficit - cause you don't believe that its real.

At which point, you worry if the new techniques will mess up his distance, his hang time, his ability to drop the ball inside the 20... speeding everything up might throw off his timing, and he might not be able to regain it...

Nope, 3 blocked punts in one season is cause for legitimate worry, though of course it might be that he was getting lousy blocking, and/or his center wasn't a particularly good deep snapper... I know nothing about the reasons, I just know the numbers...

Actually, it was pretty clear to me too... Stephen was saying that he went into this offseason with all the cap flexibility he needed to make whatever moves the team wants... perhaps you were just reading things into that quote that weren't there...

I must say, you pick some really strange things to get ticked about... is that quote REALLY that offensive to you??

This kid may get a legitimate shot. Someone will have to be cut.

It won't shock me if that player is Kenyon Coleman.

Or McGee.

Going to laugh my *** off if he has a better year than Jacksonville's since they bkew a third rounder on their punter.

What are the chances they let Coale compete as the punter. His college average was better than Jones'. After all, Danny White punted....

Somebody didn't think that post through...

IF McGee gets cut (which I find unlikely, do you think he's gonna get beat out by Rudy Carpenter or Nathan Dick, who isn't even officially on the team yet??), then that slot will be filled by another QB... so he won't factor into whether we keep Harrington or not...

But Coleman, he's likely to be replaced by Crawford, who's already on the roster, so cutting him would open up a spot for David...

But hey, your post wasn't a total waste-- at least you got to let us know that you don't like McGee... unfortunately, that really doesn't have anything to do with the topic at hand...

Are you by any chance inflicted with a condition like ADD, which makes reading comprehension difficult for you??

IMO, Coale will be the emergency punter, but won't be given a shot at the starting job... it would be dangerous and silly at the same time to do so, what happens if he rolls an ankle running a pass pattern?? Danny White is the exception that proves the rule...
