Appalachian State cornerback Cortez Gilbert has dreams of being drafted into the NFL. Defensive tackles Malcolm Bennett and Anthony Williams, linebacker Jacque Roman and tight end Tim Frye would like land in and NFL training camp this summer.
All of them joined Armanti Edwards, the main attraction, at Appalachian State's pro day held at Kidd Brewer Stadium Tuesday. While Edwards grabbed most of the attention of the media assembled afterward, the other Mountaineers went through the same basic drills of 40-yard dashes, vertical leaps, long jumps and the classic bench pressing 225 pounds as many times as they can.

Edwards was the lone Mountaineer to be invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, so the 10 teams assembled at Kidd Brewer - the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers, are already familiar with him.

The other Mountaineers had Tuesday to prove themselves. Gilbert, who has been told by scouts he could be drafted in the latter rounds, was not happy with his 40-yard dash times, but felt everything else went well.
Gilbert felt not only would be end up in an NFL camp, but he could be drafted in the latter rounds. He said that although it didn't matter if he got drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent, those who get drafted generally end up with better contracts.

"I'm concerned about where I get drafted," he said. "I'm going to get a look. I'm not worried about that."
Gilbert, who is 5-foot-11, 180-pounds from Pikeville, finished his career with four interceptions, 26 pass break-ups and 194 total tackles. He was a two-year starter at cornerback, but got his biggest start in the 2007 FCS national championship game when four-year starter Justin Woazeah was suspended.
Williams, a two-time All-SoCon defensive tackle, measured in a 6-foot-1, 293 pounds. Williams is keeping his options open. He went through drills as a defensive tackle and not as a nose tackle.

Williams has weighed as much as 304 pounds, an advantage for defensive tackles in the NFL. As players along defensive lines get bigger, Williams knows he'll have to keep hitting the weight room to get stronger. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 24 times.
Williams has been training at his home in Charlotte.
"I got pretty positive feedback," Williams said. "I just have to keep hanging in there and it will work out for me."

Williams said he'd be willing to play in the Canadian Football League if the NFL doesn't work out.
"It doesn't matter," Williams said. "I want to play ball."
Bennett, a 6-0, 285 defensive tackle, bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times. Bennett, a transfer from Georgia Military College, started 27 games for the Mountaineers, finishing with 82 tackles in two years. He had three sacks last year.

Bennett said he could either play along the defensive line, or maybe switch to linebacker. He was willing to slim down if he was to be used as a linebacker.
"I could go in and lose some weight if I needed to if I had to convert to linebacker," Bennett said. "I can do anything."
He also felt he could add 15 pounds if he was projected to play defensive line.
"I don't think I would lose a step if I got up to 300 (pounds)," Bennett said.
