I created an Excel file that keeps track of wins and losses for every NFL team and it lists every Head Coach they have ever had. Tonight I put the finishing touches on that file and I thought you might like to see some of the info.

In alphabetical order by host city or state.
  • Arizona Cardinals, 93rd year, 41 Head Coaches, 496-699-39. Most losses in NFL History. Next loss is the 700th in franchise History. Over 200 victories less than the Bears in the same number of years in the NFL. Most head Coaches in NFL History.
  • Atlanta Falcons, 47th year, 16 Head Coaches, 299-399-6. Next win gives them 300, next loss gives them 400.
  • Baltimore Ravens, 17th year, 3 Head Coaches, 140-115-1.
  • *Buffalo Bills, 53rd year, 18 Head Coaches, 364-416-8.
  • Carolina Panthers, 18th year, 4 Head Coaches, 125-147. One of only 4 teams with no tie games ever.
  • Chicago Bears, 93rd year, 15 Head Coaches, 712-520-42. Most wins in NFL History.
  • Cincinnati Bengals, 45th year, 9 Head Coaches, 295-379-2.
  • Cleveland Browns, 64th year, 16 Head Coaches, 489-410-13.
  • Dallas Cowboys, 53rd year, 8 Head Coaches, 448-332-6.
  • *Denver Broncos, 53rd year, 14 Head Coaches, 406-372-10
  • Detroit Lions, 83rd year, 26 Head Coaches, 506-599-32. Next loss is 600th in franchise History.
  • Green Bay Packers, 92nd year, 15 Head Coaches, 679-525-36. 2nd most wins in NFL History.
  • Houston Texans, 11th year, 2 Head Coaches, 65-95. One of only 4 teams with no tie games ever.
  • Indianapolis Colts, 60th year, 20 Head Coaches, 453-410-7. The team closest to the Cowboys in career wins, but 7 more seasons of play. So if we are good and they suck, we could move past them on the all time wins list.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars, 18th year, 4 Head Coaches, 138-134. One of only 4 teams with no tie games ever.
  • *Kansas City Chiefs, 53rd year, 12 Head Coaches, 402-374-12.
  • Miami Dolphins, 47th year, 10 Head Coaches, 400-300-4. Kind of cool how their W-L records are both on century marks.
  • Minnesota Vikings, 52nd year, 9 Head Coaches, 416-349-9.
  • *New England Patriots, 53rd year, 15 Head Coaches, 414-365-9.
  • New Orleans Saints, 46th year, 15 Head Coaches, 299-386-5. Next win is number 300 in franchise History. I am counting Joe Vitt as their 15th Head Coach and when he serves his suspension I guess I will count Carmichael as the 16th. Or Carmichael as 15th and Vitt as 16th if they do it that way.
  • New York Giants, 88th year, 17 Head Coaches, 645-531-33. 3rd most wins in NFL History.
  • *New York Jets, 53rd year, 17 Head Coaches, 359-421-8. Same number of Head Coaches as the Giants in 35 fewer seasons.
  • *Oakland Raiders, 53rd year, 19 Head Coaches, 426-351-11.
  • Philadelphia Eagles, 80th year, 22 Head Coaches, 517-549-26.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers, 79th year, 19 Head Coaches, 553-503-20.
  • *San Diego Chargers, 53rd year, 15 Head Coaches, 392-385-11.
  • San Francisco 49ers, 67th year, 18 Head Coaches, 522-423-15.
  • Seattle Seahawks, 37th year, 8 Head Coaches, 269-295. One of only 4 teams with no tie games ever.
  • St. Louis Rams, 75th year, 26 Head Coaches, 513-506-20. This is their Platinum Anniversary Season.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 37th year, 9 Head Coaches, 222-341-1.
  • *Tennessee Titans, 53rd year, 17 Head Coaches, 386-396-6.
  • Washington Commanders, 81st year, 28 Head Coaches, 552-527-27.
* = came into professional football same year as Dallas.

Very nice. I feel bad for the Cards. They are older than 93, and really don't have much to show for their history as the oldest team in the NFL.

It would be nice to compare winning percentages. Does your spreadsheet include a column for that? Shouldn't be hard to add one, in any event.

Highest Winning %s in NFL History.

Chicago Bears, .5754
Dallas Cowboys, .5738
Miami Dolphins, .5710

It doesn't yet, but it will have one soon. I posted the top 3 above.

No surprise which team is on top. We just need that 6th Lombardi to reestablish all-time, league-wide supremacy definitively. (Not that there isn't a reasonable basis to argue for it at present.)

On another note, I calculated slightly different winning percentages (started looking at those very teams, plus San Fran, based on your original post). Does your formula do something other than divide wins by total number of games played?

Probably takes into account ties.

My calculation took ties into account. Dallas, for example, has 448 wins in 786 (448+332+6) total games, which yields a .569 winning percentage, using the numbers Hos provided.

I calculated the winning percentage and average number of years per coach for all teams.

Winning Percentage = Wins / (Wins+Losses+Ties)

You guys both got the same numbers.

Maybe it's like bsheern said and it takes into account the post-season?

Yeah, that would be my guess.

My calculations show 57.4% (matches the official win%). You are either not accounting for the 6 tie games (as half a win & half a loss) or calculating them differently.

You are right. I did forget to calculate for ties.

Edit coming.

These are the corrected calculations based upon ties, which I forgot earlier.
