Some notes from the Detroit game

Detroit's game plan was to stop our 1st down runs. They usually had a safety drop into the box and then had someone come on a run blitz. The back seven did a good job in support. Detroit was aggressive and it worked well. We had numerous runs that gained little to no yards on 1st down. We were forced into 2nd and 3rd and longs which allowed them to bring the blitzes. We had a difficult time picking them up which lead to 3 sacks in the first half. If you take out the Williams TD we were shutdown in the first half.

Offensively, Detroit took advantage of a mismatch (Church on Tate) and scored quickly. They also had the 99 yard drive which happened because of the costly penalty. On both drives we missed a lot of tackles. Very sloppy. Once we cleaned up the tackling and started getting pressure, we held them to 6 points the rest of the game.

After the half, we started calling more 3 WR shotgun formations on first down. Detroit still brought a blitz but they couldn't go all out because they had to honor the pass. This helped us get the offense going. It looked like we realized that they would bring a DB on a run blitz because I noticed Romo pointing it out in the 2nd half and would run away from that side. I thought Romo did a good job not forcing things for the most part. His accuracy wasn't at top form but he made plays when it mattered. He may hold onto the ball longer than he should but I'll take sacks over interceptions.

Suh caused problems all game. Martin had his hands full. He was able to hold his own on a few plays but Suh was able to beat him on a few and caused havoc. Mosley made plays in the run game. Their interior is very good with Levy backing them up.

On Detroit's final drive Marinelli was mixing and matching the line. We really miss Melton in those late game situations. He had Crawford, Hayden, Brent, McClain, and Mincey all line up inside and even had Wilber at RDE for a play. Luckily Detroit's offensive line was far from full strength so we were able to get pressure.

A few more thoughts:
After watching the coaches tape there were plays Detroit had a receiver open but we were able to get pressure just in time which forced Stafford to throw the check down. Green Bay has a much better offensive line so those throws will be available. On the other hand, they don't have the defense Detroit has so we should be able to get the run game going a little bit sooner. Time of possession will be crucial for us. So many interesting match ups against GB. Can't wait.

If you notice on the "Best Bounce Ever" Spillman had his feet standing on the end zone line and almost touched the ball. I noticed that during the game and almost freaked out because I thought he touched it first. For people who get paid a boatload of money to do a job they sure make some bonehead mistakes sometimes. I am glad this time was not one of them.

great stuff.

On that Carter near pick, FOX had a field level view and Carter was out of Stafford's view. He was almost hiding behind Ebron, the Tight End and Stafford never saw him. Even though he dropped the int, ball was rifled, unbelievable how quick and athletic Carter is at 240-245.

and you can see the referee look at Spillman's foot on the goal line, he was ready to call that if Spillman had downed that thing.

Damn, Parnell was bad on that pitch to Witten near the endzone.

Yes. I think Carter is a must resign. He is about to come into his own. The switch from the 3-4 was particularity hard on him.

Also tells us how close these games are
Carter is 6 more inches away and that is a TD

I was a little surprised in the first half that we kept running it on 1st down as often as we did. I know the Lions had a tendency to rarely stack the box, but it was pretty evident that on every first down they were stacking the box. I kept expecting an audible out of it but we'd just run right into it, I guess we were just seeing if we could be successful doing it, but it didn't work.

Also, was pretty apparent Church is not good in coverage. They targeted him a few times for big gains. There was another play Tate came across the middle into his zone and Church completely whiffed on him. He's going to have to play better against GB or they're going to isolate him as often as possible.

itsaboat great post and insight as usual

Carharris2 I don't agree
Carter is very athletic but just not consistent enough to be a must sign
He could be one of the best LB s in the league if he can be consistent but he does not have the drive to do that so for now he is a nice fall back

There was a play early on where they ran on 1st down and the guy covering T.Williams dropped down to defend the run and T.Will was completely open. Williams twice pointed to the guy as-if to say this run is going to fail because that guy is dropping down and indeed that was the defender that stopped the run right at the line. If Romo had given Williams some type of thumbs up and then tossed him the ball, it would have been a big gain.

after watching this. How the heck did profootballfocus give parnell the best oline grade with multiple mess ups and sacks given because of him? I guess that just shows you how messed up there rating are.
Because you don't know the assignments.

Sturm said he was perfect on the day as well.

PFF ratings don't mean anything as far as I can tell. Like, literally.
