Some other observations I had today..

Nate Jones is a decent blitzer. He times things well. He keeps hustling too. Decent utility guy.

Bobby Carpenter has some speed, even with a quad tendon tear. He didn't make the tackle on special teams on the Hall TD, but he almost caught up to him and was close to getting a diving tackle. I know I know, almost and close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades. But, every once in a while I get a glimpse of Carpenters talent. He has been strong on special teams this year. He has some tools. Perhaps he is one of those guys where the lightbulb really goes on end of year 2 or in year 3. I haven't given up hope yet.

TE Curtis. He is a weakness at times on special teams. I felt he was out of position on the Hall Td return and he didn't make a great effort at the tackle, jumping over one of our own guys' legs instead of focussing on Hall. He also was the wedge guy early in the season that let the player through who stripped Thompson. That's 2 costly mistakes. Rookie stuff. Good upside though.

Pat Watkins. Is it just me or has he really bulked up. He is hitting people hard on special teams (more so the first 3 games) but he has been popping people, wrapping up, and not giving up much ground. Had good coverage on that fake/botched field goal in Chicago too. He's contributing. Last year he looked fragile and even the coaches were worried about his tackling. Now he looks and is playing more physical and is intimidating. I saw him smacking guys on kickoffs and coverages a few times and giving better than he got, even beating through double teams. Haven't seen this mentioned. He deserves credit.

Reeves played strong today. Couple of good break ups, even after receiver had hands on ball. Didn't like Troy Aikman saying it could have been PI on the challenged sideline play. Thought Reeves did great stripping ball and that the guy was actually out of bound more than interfered with.

Smart to play disciplined football against a back against the wall opponent. 2 penalties for 10 yards. Flo was focussed.

Pass protection was pretty great again. Anyone notice how big our pocket stays. Tons of escape lanes and OLine is not being pushed back very far.

Romo's passer rating would be astronomical if our guys didn't have the dropsies sometimes. I know it happens, but they are less noticeable when winning. 3 or 4 drops today I thought (TO over the middle on that high one maybe, Barber, one to a TE low but in the gut). At least 3 or 4 last week (the TD in particular). That being said, TO made 2 very tough grabs today that helped us get 1st downs.

Just some thoughts.

Manny Lawson would have done cartwheels past Dante Hall.

I kid, I kid.

Nate Jones is an agressive blitzer that puts QB on the turf

Good memories!

I will say this though, I think I like Spencer more than I would of liked Lawson, and you know I loved Lawson.

It helps when the refs don't have a personal agenda or don't seem out to get you like last week.

Well 2 years ago there was some heated debate over drafting Lawson or Carp. I was vehemently against drafting Carp and wanted Lawson.

If we had picked Lawson last year we probably would not have picked Spencer this year and I think that Spencer is better than Lawson. So go figure, life is funny that way.

You're right on that. Carpenter is clearly a slow bloomer. But people forget how he turned it on at the end of last year. He'll be a player, he just needs to grow into a steady role on this defense. The problem is, which starter are you going to replace right now? I think if Ayodele or James ever get hurt (God forbid) or leave the team, Carpenter is ready to step in and we'll see some production.

I think we can thank Joe Juraszek, our strength/conditioning coach, on this one. One thing I always see is the difference in our players' physical presence between their first and second season. Plus, all that griping on Watkins' tackles by Parcells must have done some good.

Chances are that we'll lock up Ken Hamlin when this season is over, but if we for some reason don't, then Pat Watkins will definitely be able to step in and take over.

I hated us letting go of Aaron Glenn, but I must admit that Reeves has proven me wrong. He's grown into a solid corner. Nothing fantastic. He's not flashy. But he hasn't given up many big plays, and he's just been solid overall. He's not a liability.

I have been pleasantly surprised at our pass protection lately. I rarely see blitzers shooting through the line of scrimmage constantly like we've seen the last few years. No longer am I asking the question "Why can't we get to the quarterback like they're doing?"
